Why FYN is South Africa’s Restaurant of the Year

The South African food community gathered at the Baxter Theatre Centre on Monday, 23 March 2026, for the Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards. While the evening was a “definitive victory lap” for the Western Cape—which saw seven of the eight national Three-Star ratings go to local establishments—the ultimate spotlight belonged to FYN. Crowning the night as Restaurant of the Year, FYN has solidified its position as the pinnacle of fine dining in the heart of Cape Town’s City Bowl.

A Fusion of Two Worlds

The primary reason for FYN’s ascent to the top is its masterful ability to balance two seemingly disparate worlds. Judges praised the restaurant for its “world-class precision” and a seamless fusion of Japanese technique with South African identity. Founded by Chef Peter Tempelhoff, alongside Jennifer Hugé and Ashley Moss, the restaurant was built as a platform to explore the Cape’s extraordinary biodiversity through a lens of restraint.

FYN

By drawing from fynbos-covered mountains and the wild coastline, and expressing those ingredients through the rigors of Japanese culinary philosophy, FYN offers a narrative that is both deeply local and globally relevant. Each dish in the multi-course experience moves from clarity and lightness into depth and complexity, revealing layers of technique beneath an appearance of quiet simplicity.

Excellence Beyond the Plate

FYN’s victory was not based on the kitchen alone; the awards recognized a “unified ecosystem” of excellence. Jennifer Hugé, the Service and Beverage Director, was honoured with the Eat Out Patrón Mixology Award for her work at both FYN and its sister restaurant, Beyond.

This recognition highlights the restaurant’s boundary-pushing beverage program, which includes South Africa’s first fine-dining sake trolley and a sophisticated non-alcoholic pairing menu utilizing fermentation, koji, and house-made tinctures. This commitment to innovation ensures that the drink offering moves in perfect harmony with the food, creating what Abigail Donnelly, Culinary Director of Eat Out, described as a dining experience defined by “precision, creativity, and balance”.

A Global Contender

The “Restaurant of the Year” title cements a legacy of international standing. FYN is not only a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux but has also consistently ranked on The World’s 50 Best extended list. Chef Peter Tempelhoff’s recent “Three Knives” accolade from The Best Chef Awards further places the restaurant alongside the most highly regarded dining rooms in the world.

Ultimately, FYN was crowned the best because it challenges the traditional boundaries of South African cuisine. It proves that local ingredients, when handled with world-class discipline, can create an emotional and sensory experience that is truly second to none.
