Ultimate School Run Surprise: Jamie Oliver Turns Durbanville Classroom into a Culinary Studio

Jamie Oliver

When celebrity chef Jamie Oliver teamed up with Checkers to tackle weeknight meal fatigue, parents waiting to collect their children at Durbanville Preparatory School (Durbanville Voorbereidingskool) were treated to an unforgettable surprise. The shoot, staged as part of Checkers’ latest “Dinner Done Better” campaign phase to coincide with schools reopening after the mid-year break, saw the global culinary star visit the campus to turn a local classroom into an interactive pop-up kitchen studio.

The world-renowned chef invited a group of unsuspecting parents and learners into the Grade 1E1 classroom, which was transformed for the day into a cozy pop-up kitchen film set. What followed was an unscripted, hands-on cooking session demonstrating how simple family meals can be.

A “Pinch-Me” Moment for Parents

For the local mothers involved, the afternoon felt entirely surreal.

“It was completely surreal,” said Michelle Adams, a mother of four boys who was surprised at the school gates. “The first recipe collection I ever bought was one of Jamie’s cookbooks, so I was naturally nervous. But he was incredibly approachable and his instructions were so clear. What struck me was how the recipes incorporate everyday ingredients we already have at home in fresh ways.”

Fellow parent Lente Swift agreed: “It was a bucket-list moment I didn’t even know I had. One minute I was picking my son up from school and the next I was cooking alongside Jamie Oliver—who made me feel completely at ease. Having one less thing to think about is a real gift for any busy mom.”

The school community celebrated hosting the global icon, expressing pride in having their own learners and parents star alongside Oliver in a converted classroom.

Beating Weeknight Meal Fatigue

The Durbanville pop-up shoot forms the creative heart of Checkers’ campaign to solve weeknight meal friction for South African families.

Checkers is rolling out 60 exclusive Jamie Oliver recipes—enough to cover every single weeknight across the entire school term. The family-focused collection caters to contemporary tastes, ranging from vibrant superfood salads and fresh meat or fish dishes to pasta favorites and hearty winter vegetable stews.

Five new recipes drop on the Checkers Sixty60 app each week, where ingredients can be ordered and delivered to front doors in under 60 minutes. Each week, one hero dish is brought to life through a step-by-step video hosted by Oliver. Physical recipe cards with direct QR codes linking to Jamie’s videos will also be included in select Sixty60 orders.

“Dinner Done Better is about taking the effort out of deciding what to cook,” explained Ilze Bylos, Chief Marketing Officer for the Shoprite Group. “Our goal is to remove friction from inspiration to checkout, helping families reclaim time for what matters most.”

The promotional footage filmed in Durbanville is officially airing across TV and digital platforms—a sweet reminder that sometimes, the cure for dinner fatigue is right in the junior block.
