The arrival of spring transformed the Overberg region into a continuous celebration of South Africa’s botanical heritage. Across two neighbouring towns, back-to-back floral showcases brought local communities together, drawing visitors to experience the extraordinary diversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom.
The festivities opened in Bredasdorp during the annual NAMPO Cape trade show, held from 9 to 12 September. While the event drew thousands to explore the latest innovations in farming and machinery, it was the stunning natural heritage of the region that stole the spotlight inside the Voermoel Hall.
Curated by acclaimed floral artist Marjolijn Malan, this year’s Fynbos Flower Exhibition transformed the hall into a celebration of the Cape Floral Kingdom. Under the creative concept “Birds of a feather, flock together,” the exhibition explored famous idioms inspired by nature and rural life through grand, expressive arrangements. Large-scale installations combined rare indigenous plant species, dried elements, and vibrant blooms to bring the surrounding fynbos landscape into sharp focus.
Creative Competition and Local Flair
A centre piece of the exhibition was the floral-arrangement competition, which brought together floral designers from across the Western Cape. Participants were challenged to interpret well-known expressions through the medium of natural plant materials, giving familiar sayings a fresh, botanical form. Visitors walked through the displays and cast votes for their favourite installation, adding an interactive community dimension to the show.
The exhibition also carried international significance. Malan, who led the creative curation, was selected by the South African Flower Union to represent the country as a demonstrator at the World Association of Floral Artists world show in Sydney, Australia. Her presence at NAMPO Cape gave local attendees a firsthand look at global-calibre floral design on home soil.
Setting the Stage for the Overberg’s Spring Celebrations
By placing indigenous flora at the centre of a major agricultural gathering, the exhibition reminded visitors of the ecological treasures that share the landscape with local farming. The successful showcase in Bredasdorp provided the perfect opening act for the Overberg’s spring floral calendar, setting a celebratory tone across the region before festivities continued nearby.
