The V&A Waterfront’s Makers Landing is thrilled to bring all Jazz lovers Friday Night Jazz at Makers Landing taking place every second and third Friday of the month. The first one takes place on Friday, 14 July 2023 at 6pm.
“Jazz music has been an integral part of social gatherings in South Africa, particularly in urban areas like Cape Town. Both food and jazz are platforms of expression linked to culture, history and commentary. At Makers Landing this Winter, we want to create a vibrant, intimate atmosphere that brings people together by joining live music and food resulting in an enjoyable multi-sensory experience,” says Donald Kau, spokesperson for the V&A Waterfront.
Visitors can look forward to an exciting line-up for July and August:
Kujenga – 14 July
Local Afro-Jazz band, Kujenga, will kick off the first night with a musical experience for all to enjoy on Friday, 14 July at Makers Landing. The core band is comprised of a four-piece rhythm section featuring, Owethu Ndwandwe on lead vocals and keys; twin brother, Zwide Ndwandwe on bass; Thane Smith on electric guitar and Skhumbuzo Qamata on drums. Kujenga’s music is a combination of different genres which come from the African diaspora, with Black improvisational music being the central point of the band’s sound.
Vernon Castle – 21 July
South African music legend, Vernon Castle, will be sure to get you up and out of your seat on Friday, 21 July at Makers Landing. Castle has nearly 50 years of performance experience and draws inspiration from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Nat King Cole, Al Jarreau and George Benson. Castle has developed his own unique style and sound and has made a name for himself in the entertainment industry in Cape Town and South Africa.
Leslie Kleinsmith – 11 August
South African Cabaret and Jazz musician, Leslie Kleinsmith, will perform on Friday, 11 August at Makers Landing. After many years in the Jazz industry, Kleinsmith has deservedly earned the title of Grand Performer. Through the years, he has learnt to master many different genres of music which includes Pop, R&B, Rock, Funk, Ballads and (Big Band) Jazz.
The Guitar Cartel – 18 August
The Guitar Cartel will take the stage on Friday, 18 August at Makers Landing. They are a group of guitarists that became brothers when they got together to share and celebrate each other’s unique style of Guitar playing from Jazz, R&B, Soul to African sounds. The Guitar Cartel features the phenomenal, Keanu Harker, Julius May and band leader, Cameron Ward.
Event starts at 6pm and ends at 8pm.
The Makers Landing food and drink vendors will be open until late, so be sure to grab a tasty meal and enjoy the music – and make it a fun Friday night out!
