A New Chapter for the Absa Cape Epic

Cape Epic

Cape Town’s Southern Sun Cape Sun, the upcoming edition promises over 700 kilometres of relentless racing, 17,000 metres of vertical ascent, and three host regions. Built around the theme One Line That Changes Everything, this route signals a fresh era of growth for the world’s premier mountain bike stage race.

High Altitudes and Legendary Singletrack

The eight-day odyssey opens with a punchy 27-kilometre Prologue at the pristine Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West. From there, the caravan moves to Ceres for two gruelling stages, featuring the longest day of the race and a historic, record-breaking ascent up Waboomsberg—the highest point ever reached in Cape Epic history.

Riders will then transition to Saronsberg in Tulbagh, tackling hidden mountain valleys and technical singletrack before entering the final chapter in Wellington. There, the legendary Queen Stage awaits, daring competitors to face the infamous Cliffhanger before rolling through the Grand Finale to the ultimate finish line at Imbuko Wines.

Life-Changing Stories on Every Trail

From the purpose-built singletrack of Eselfontein to the sweeping roads of the Swartland, the 2027 course combines world-class trails with breathtaking Western Cape scenery. Race Director Shannon Valstar highlights the deeply transformative nature of the event:

“The theme ‘One Line That Changes Everything’ captures exactly what makes the Absa Cape Epic so special. It only takes one decision to enter, one start line to cross, and one finish line to completely change how you see yourself and what you believe is possible.”

For Valstar, returning to Ceres carries personal significance—it was the very first race village she worked in during her broadcast debut. Returning years later to lead the event reflects the full-circle personal journeys shared by crew members and competitors alike.

Resilience, Partnership, and Community Spirit

Bringing a 700-kilometre route to life requires massive collaboration. Route Director Hendrico Burger paid tribute to the trail builders, private landowners, and local communities whose dedication was crucial—especially following recent heavy regional flooding.

“Following the floods earlier this year, that support has been more important than ever,” notes Burger. “Many people have gone above and beyond to restore trails, repair infrastructure, and help us create a route that showcases the very best of the Western Cape.”

The Ultimate Test Awaits

Whether battling for elite podium spots or pushing personal boundaries to earn a coveted finisher medal, every participant faces the same truth: the Cape Epic is far more than a collection of race stats. It is an extraordinary test of human partnership and perseverance.

In 2027, the Untamed African Mountain Bike Race enters a thrilling new era. For those bold enough to answer the call, the ultimate transformation begins with just one line.
