France’s historic Monnaie de Paris—one of the world’s oldest mints—has chosen this ecological marvel as the star of its 2026 UNESCO World Heritage series.
Small Footprint, Infinite Wonders
While it is the smallest of Earth’s six recognized floral kingdoms, the Cape Floral Region punches extraordinarily above its weight. Occupying less than 0.5% of the African continent, it houses nearly 20% of all African plant life. Of the estimated 9,000 species that flourish across its protected landscapes, a staggering 69% are endemic, found nowhere else on Earth. From architectural restios and aromatic buchus to vivid pelargoniums and the brilliant Red Disa orchid, it is a masterclass in biodiversity.
Beauty Forged in Fire
At the heart of this realm lies fynbos, a unique flora shaped by harsh winters, dry summers, and nutrient-poor soils. Far from merely surviving, fynbos thrives on resilience, evolving alongside natural bushfires that trigger seed release and spark vital ecological renewal.
It was this dance between beauty and grit that inspired Joaquin Jimenez, Chief Engraver and Director of Artistic Creation at Monnaie de Paris.
“The King Protea made a lasting impression,” Jimenez notes. “Its bold, crown-like structure translates beautifully into metal. But beyond its shape, I was fascinated by its relationship with fire—how it needs the heat to release its seeds and regenerate. Capturing that resilience in a few millimetres of metal was a wonderful challenge.”

The coin’s design anchors Table Mountain within a rich botanical tapestry, honouring a site that encompasses 13 protected area clusters over a million hectares.
