The Momentum Medical Scheme Cape Pioneer, presented by Biogen, returns from 22 to 26 September 2026. Affectionately known as the “Race with Soul,” this UCI-status mountain bike stage race blends high-octane racing across the Garden Route and Klein Karoo with relaxed hospitality and deep community connection.
This year’s edition promises a buzzing atmosphere in the race villages, with a stacked elite field and 40% more riders on the start line than in 2025.
Swartberg Bypass Triggers Tactical Shake-Up
The defining news of the 2026 edition is an unexpected route detour. With the closure of Meiringspoort rerouting heavy road traffic over the Swartberg Pass, organizers Dryland Event Management pivoted to prioritize rider safety.
Instead of tackling the legendary Swartberg climb, Stage 4 will now thread through the steep hills, deep valleys, and rocky terrain of the Swartberg foothills near the Red Stone Hills.
The total course now covers 387 kilometres with 7,100 meters of elevation gain. While fewer vertical meters typically mean a less attritional race, the shift eliminates the massive climb where pure climbers usually dominate. The change opens the door for long-range breakaways, tactical attacking, and an unpredictable General Classification battle.
Open Field for UCI Women’s Crown
In the UCI Women’s race, three-time defending champion Samantha Sanders targets another title alongside former race winner Sarah Maré (Efficient Infiniti Insure). Sanders predicts the revised route will flatten the playing field and spark aggressive tactics right from Stage 1.
Their main challenge is expected to come from Danielle du Toit—who won the 2024 edition with Sanders—and Roxanne Kemp (Safari Essence Titan Racing). Hungry dark-horse pairings, including Rachel Seaman and Bianca Botha (Cycle Nation Enza Construction), Luzaan Durand and Silke Bester (Absolute Motion), and Chloé Hopf and Lilian Baber (Summerplace Hollard Racing), are all eager to disrupt the established favourites.
High Stakes in the UCI Men’s Battle
The UCI Men’s field features dynamic storylines across established powerhouses and rising talent. With 2025 champions Travis Stedman and Tristan Nortje absent, Lood Goosen and Ignatius du Preez (Toyota Specialized Imbuko) step out of support roles to fly the flag solo for their squad.
They face fierce competition from Insect Science, who arrive in force. 2024 winners Arno du Toit and Keagan Bontekoning return to reclaim their crown, supported by squadmates Wessel Botha and Jan Withaar.
Meanwhile, Marc Pritzen and Felix Stehli stand out as top contenders, riding 32-inch Stoll bikes and using the rugged Klein Karoo as a proving ground for cutting-edge cycling tech. Podiums will be fiercely contested, with hungry teams like CVNR, Tshenolo Pro Cycling, Project Dream SA, and Pump for Peace ready to pounce.
