The Garden Route Giro is set to return for its second edition from 19 to 24 April 2027, taking on a completely redesigned course that builds on the success of its 2026 debut. Organized by Dryland Event Management, the six-day gravel stage race will take returning and new participants through George, De Rust, Prince Albert, Volmoed, Riversdale, and Hartenbos. Spanning a total distance of 593 kilometres—78% of which is proper off-road gravel—riders will conquer 8,750 metres of accumulated elevation gain across iconic mountain passes and semi-arid terrain.
Historic Passes and Iconic Landscapes
A major highlight of the 2027 route is the inclusion of the historic Montagu Pass, South Africa’s oldest unaltered mountain pass still in use today. Recent repairs have allowed organisers to bring the route back through George, connecting coastal flats directly to the Klein Karoo. Participants will also experience iconic landmarks like the towering sandstone cliffs of Meiringspoort, the remote Klein Rooiberg section, and the formidable Swartberg Pass, offering a blend of rich history and stark geological beauty.
A Six-Stage Journey Across the Karoo
The six-day race begins in Blanco (George) with a 79 km opening stage over Montagu Pass to De Rust. Day two covers 112 km into the Great Karoo through Meiringspoort toward Prince Albert, setting up a brutal third day: a 92 km leg featuring the famous 14 km Swartberg Pass climb, with gradients exceeding 12%.
Stage 4 stands as the event’s “Queen Stage”—a grueling 141 km test across remote back roads near Volmoed and Riversdale with 2,200 metres of climbing. The race then turns back toward the coast on Stage 5, taking in 119 km of rolling Hessequa farmland and vineyards before ending in Hartenbos. A fast 50 km final stage brings riders full circle back to George for a well-earned celebration at the Olympia Equestrian Estate.
