Wine Tourism in the Western Cape: Minister Meyer meets Cobus Germishuys

Western Cape

When the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, Dr. Ivan Meyer, and his team stepped onto the historic soils of Kanu Estate in Stellenbosch – it was a live demonstration of where the future of South Africa’s R9.3 billion wine tourism economy is headed. Having become familiar with Tasting Room Manager Cobus Germishuys through social media and media coverage, Minister Meyer specifically sought out a meeting with the man widely celebrated as the “Wine Angel of Stellenbosch”.

From Daylight to the Deep Cellar

Upon their arrival, Cobus warmly welcomed the Minister and his team, sharing a short chat to set a relaxed, personal tone before starting the cellar tour. Sharing a deep mutual passion for history and tourism, Cobus and Minister Meyer connected instantly.

Guided by Cobus, the team experienced a beautiful unfolding journey that take visitors from the bright upstairs tasting room straight down into the atmospheric underground cellar.

As they walked down the stairs Cobus shared the fascinating history of the farm, capturing the team’s interest including its historic transition from the original Mulderbosch farm on the Bottelary Hills. Reaching the cellar, the Minister and his crew moved past traditional wooden wine barrels and the fascinating, modern egg-shaped concrete fermenters before entering the intimate, exclusive underground tasting lounge—a beautifully atmospheric space.

Immersive History in Restored Booths

Coming out of the tasting lounge, the delegation stepped onto the red carpet aisle. This unique underground corridor is creatively utilized for special functions. It acts as a stunning venue for wine clubs, corporate gatherings, and intimate conferences.

The team then explored the cozy tasting booths flanking the red carpet. These booths, beautifully restored to breathe fresh life into the cellar, are named after Kanu’s favourite cultivars: Chenin Blanc, Merlot, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, and a nod to their MCC (Méthode Cap Classique). Each offers guests the opportunity to feel immersed in the wine they are tasting, with personalised facts about the grape’s history and its place in South Africa’s winemaking heritage.

Flipping the Script from Servers to Hosts

A stunning wine estate needs more than beautiful buildings to thrive; it takes real human connection. When a team shifts from being simple “servers” to true “hosts,” they don’t just pour wine—they share the estate’s soul, transforming a tasting into a lasting memory.

Cobus Germishuys, whose career at Kanu Estate traces back to March 2000, is the absolute embodiment of this human-centric hospitality asset. Over his decades of dedication, Cobus has managed hospitality for global icons alongside many other celebrities.

Raising a Glass of Liquid Gold

Settling into the comfortable upstairs lounge for a wine tasting accompanied by beautifully prepared cheese boards, the room filled with laughter as Cobus shared his stories with his trademark playful twinkle, infectious energy, and smooth delivery.

The tasting highlighted several estate favourites that the team had special interest in, including the Kanu Chenin Blanc, the Pinotage, the Old Vine Sauvignon, and the Shiraz tasting. It was in this relaxed atmosphere that Cobus introduced the Kanu Angelina Gold Cap Classique. This exceptional bubbly contains 24 carats of edible, harmless gold flakes—a historic first for a sparkling wine in South Africa, crafted by Winemaker and Cellar Master Johan Grimbeek.

The Master Storyteller

It was right here in the lounge that the absolute magic of Cobus’s storytelling took centre stage. He shared his now-legendary tale of Jacoob’s transformation into Jacob—a story delivered with such conviction and theatrical flair that most of the visiting team genuinely thought it to be true. The entire room was completely intrigued by his narrative before erupting into a hearty, shared laughter. At Kanu, Cobus proves that he is far more than a Tasting Room Manager; he is a guide, a confidant, and a true friend to everyone who visits.

Mentoring the Next Generation

Minister Meyer took time to interact directly with Kanu’s passionate young Wine Ambassadors who were on duty, including Amy Robinson, Thomas Winter, and Nicole Stevens. Guided by Cobus’s hands-on mentorship, these rising stars are gaining the knowledge and confidence required to engage beautifully with guests, making sure that every visitor walks away with a truly memorable experience while proudly sharing South Africa’s wine heritage. By actively employing and mentoring local youth, providing cross-industry skills to culinary and law students, and innovating its physical infrastructure, Kanu demonstrates a visible accountability to its region.

A Multi-Layered Lifestyle Retreat

As the last stop before they left, the team explored the Du Vin restaurant—a Japanese-inspired izakaya-style eatery that also features South Africa’s first dedicated sushi-and-wine pairing. Families are welcomed with activities such as bass fishing on the dam and a professional putt-putt course, while The Nest serves as a dedicated Curio Shop, proving that the estate is an accessible, multi-layered destination for all.

A Blueprint for the Winelands

As the lovely afternoon came to an end, Minister Meyer and his team left with shared memories, plenty of laughter, and a firm promise that they would definitely return. Cobus Germishuys, a cherished presence in the heart of the Western Cape’s wine region, continues to inspire and enchant, proving that in the realm of wine, the perfect host transcends the act of serving to forge genuine connections.
