Fondue, Fine Art, and Fun Runs: The 9-Day Wine Town Stellenbosch Calendar

Stellenbosch

If a bustling, walk-around festival hall isn’t your speed, Wine Town Stellenbosch has spent 55 years perfecting the alternative. From Saturday, 25 July to Sunday, 2 August, the entire region transforms into a decentralized playground of curated lifestyle experiences.

While these intimate events happen across individual estates, they all serve as the perfect warmup or wind-down to the historic Stellenbosch Wine Festival taking place at the Town Hall on 31 July and 1 August. Because reservations for these boutique experiences are strictly limited, you will want to lock down your itinerary early. Here is how to map out your ultimate winter wine week.

Saturday, 25 July: The Grand Opening & Vintage Vaults

Kick off the Wine Town festivities in the morning with the inaugural Wine Town Run/Walk at Dornier Wine Estate. Hosted in partnership with Runventure, you can choose between a scenic 5km or 10km route winding directly through the winter vineyards.

Once you have stretched your legs, head over to Simonsig for their acclaimed Vintage Day. Winemakers spend days selecting older back-vintages at the absolute peak of their maturation for guests to taste and buy. It also marks the 55th anniversary of their iconic Kaapse Vonkel cap classique, celebrated with live music, food, and plenty of birthday bubbles.

Sunday, 26 July: Candlelit Swiss Fondue

If your ultimate winter fantasy involves hot, swirling cheese, Delheim Wine Estate has you covered with their Live Music and Cheese Fondue Sundays (running both weekends of the festival). Their cozy, low-ceilinged downstairs tasting cellar features rustic, candlelit tables where friends and family can huddle around authentic Swiss-recipe fondue pots while live acoustic music sets a festive mood.

Wednesday, 29 July: Midweek Trivia & Refined Italian Vibes

For something social and playful, Morgenster Estate is hosting a sharp, midweek Quiz Night. Teams of six will go head-to-head over an evening of wine and trivia. Set against the estate’s refined, Italian-influenced backdrop, it is a brilliant way to experience one of the Helderberg’s historic gems beyond the standard tasting room format.

Thursday, 30 July: Canvas, Brushes, and Cabernet

Look at your wine from a completely different perspective at the Sip and Paint Experience hosted by Clos Malverne Restaurant. Spend a relaxed afternoon pairing canvas and brushes with the estate’s top pours. All painting essentials and expert guidance are included—no prior artistic talent required.

Saturday, 1 August: Retro Rouge & Historical Storytelling

While the main festival is in full swing at the Town Hall, you can find a cozy alternative by stepping back in time at Muratie Wine Estate. Their Retro Rouge Winter Wine Fest celebrates the estate’s deep-rooted history through vintage wines, rich storytelling, smooth company, and live music. It’s the perfect, old-world way to spend a long winter afternoon.
