Firehorse: Keeping the Flame Alive at Vergelegen

Vergelegen

In the world of South African hospitality, few names carry the weight of tradition quite like Vergelegen Wine Estate. However, even the most storied institutions face trials. Following a devastating fire in March that gutted the beloved Stables restaurant, the Somerset West estate has proven its characteristic resilience by unveiling a new chapter in its culinary journey: Firehorse.

A Phoenix in the Vineyards

Opened on Friday, 17 April 2026, Firehorse is a temporary restaurant designed to bridge the gap while the Stables undergoes a meticulous restoration process. Located directly alongside the original site and adjacent to the estate’s iconic legacy vineyard block, the venue offers seating for 130 guests.

The space strikes a perfect balance between nostalgia and fresh beginnings. The décor pays a thoughtful tribute to the equestrian heritage of the Stables, ensuring that the spirit of the original restaurant remains intact. With marquee sides that open up, the design invites the outside in, allowing diners to enjoy an al fresco experience accompanied by sweeping, panoramic mountain views.

Classics Reimagined

Loyal patrons will be relieved to find that the heart of the Stables menu lives on at Firehorse. Whether you are visiting for a crisp morning start or a leisurely afternoon feast, the offerings remain as robust as ever:

  • Breakfast: Start your day with sophisticated staples like eggs Benedict, French toast, or smashed avocado on toast. For those seeking something heartier, the farm breakfast is a mainstay, alongside freshly baked croissants and blueberry scones.
  • Lunch: The starters lean into coastal and classic flavors, featuring salmon tartare, West Coast mussels, and traditional French onion soup.
  • Mains: The menu spans the best of South African and international comfort, from local bobotie and grilled kingklip to melanzane and succulent grilled tiger prawns.
  • Casual Fare: A curated selection of signature salads and burgers is available, including a vegan burger served with crispy French fries.
  • Dessert: End on a sweet note with a citrus crème brûlée, rich chocolate mousse, or a light berry Pavlova.

Resilience with a Purpose

For Vergelegen CEO Wayne Coetzer, Firehorse is more than just a temporary dining room—it is a lifeline. “Firehorse represents continuity and resilience,” Coetzer explains, noting that the fire was contained quickly with no injuries reported.

Perhaps most importantly, the operation of Firehorse allows the estate to retain its 73 dedicated staff members. By visiting the restaurant or booking it as a private functions venue, guests are directly contributing to the job security and stability of the team while the seven-month rebuild of the Stables commences.
