2026 Knysna Oyster Festival and Cycle Tour: A Winter Sports and Culinary Spectacle

Knysna Oyster Festival

The Garden Route is preparing for the return of the Knysna Oyster Festival, taking place from 3 to 12 July 2026. Guided by this year’s theme, “A feast of family fun,” the landmark 10-day event transforms the coastal town into South Africa’s premier winter hub for lifestyle enthusiasts, food lovers, and elite athletes.

While events extend across the lagoon and surrounding areas, the main heartbeat of the festival will be anchored at the Knysna High School Sports Fields along Waterfront Drive. This central Festival Hub will host live entertainment, eco-activations, and coordinate the festival’s legendary sporting events.

An Elite VIP Tasting Experience for Wine Lovers

For those looking to swap their cycling helmets for wine glasses, the Knysna Fine Wine Festival anchors the opening weekend on 3 and 4 July at the exclusive Simola Golf & Country Estate. Overlooking breathtaking landscapes, the event offers a premium VIP tasting experience featuring the finest regional vintages from 25 top South African winemakers.

To ensure an intimate, crowd-free atmosphere, the tasting calendar is divided into four exclusive sessions across the weekend: a Sunset Tasting on Friday night, followed by Midday, Afternoon, and Evening blocks on Saturday.

The wine journey continues throughout the festival week at the Blend Country Restaurant and Pub, which will host the specialized “Wine Tasting and Boards” experience featuring premium Franschhoek wines thoughtfully paired with an artisanal selection of Fairview cheeses. Furthermore, during the midweek Oyster Cooking and Shucking Championships, top wine estates will set up boutique tasting stations right on the main festival floor, pairing their best bottles directly with the culinary creations of local chefs.

Knysna Cycle Tour takes Center Stage

Serving as the foundational sporting anchor of the final weekend, the Knysna Cycle Tour (10–12 July) returns with a fully revitalized, multi-discipline lineup. Registration launches on Friday, 10 July at the main festival marquee, paving the way for two days of world-class racing action.

The cycling weekend kicks off on Saturday, 11 July, with the highly anticipated Mountain Bike (MTB) Rides. Cyclists will roll out from Waterfront Drive early in the morning to tackle grueling but beautiful backcountry routes, featuring 67km, 45km, and 35km courses. Families can join shorter 5km or 7.5km fun tracks designed for riding, running, or walking.

On Sunday, 12 July, the action shifts to asphalt for the Road Races, featuring a signature 102km classic and a popular 42km route for solo riders and tandem teams. Simultaneously, the adrenaline-fueled Enduro Events test technical skills on the steep terrain of Simola Hill, while children’s fun rides round out the day on safe, closed circuits around the Festival Hub.

Gourmet Delights, Marathons, and Classic Cars

Beyond the cycling tracks and wine pavilions, runners will take to the gravel for the legendary Knysna Forest Marathon, drawing thousands into the mist-shrouded deep forest paths.

Naturally, oysters take top billing throughout the week. The Knysna Lagoon plays host to daily Oyster Cruises, where guests pair fresh coastal delicacies with premium local MCC sparkling wines while gliding across the water. Automotive enthusiasts can also enjoy the Thesen Islands Car Show, a charity exhibition at the SANPARKS area showcasing a rare collection ranging from 1930s antiques to modern exotic supercars.
