Then. Now. Forever: Honouring 344 Years of Heritage at Blaauwklippen Wine Estate

Blaauwklipppen

Established in 1682, Blaauwklippen stands as South Africa’s oldest wine farm and the first registered company in the Cape Winelands. For more than three centuries, it has embodied the spirit of resilience, hospitality, and craftsmanship that defines the region. Set against the majestic Stellenbosch Mountains, its tree-lined avenues and historic buildings have long welcomed travellers, from horse-drawn carriages of the 18th century to modern-day explorers.

The Fire That Changed Everything

On 7 April 2024, gale-force winds of up to 139 km/h fuelled a devastating fire that swept across the estate. Within hours, the historic Manor House, Jonkershuis, and Cathedral were reduced to ashes. While the loss of these Cape Dutch landmarks marked a profound moment in South Africa’s heritage, no lives were lost — a testament to the swift and coordinated response of the estate’s Disaster Management team, local firefighters, neighbouring farms, and staff who ensured the safe evacuation of all guests and employees.

Rebuilding with Respect and Precision

Two years on, April 2026 marks not only remembrance but renewal. Under strict heritage guidelines, every detail of the lost structures was meticulously reconstructed. Original materials — including centuries-old bricks and fragments of Delft porcelain — were carefully restored and reintroduced.

The Manor officially reopened on 1 February 2026, once again offering five-star accommodation. With interiors by acclaimed designer Francois du Plessis, the spaces balance classic Cape Dutch elegance with vibrant, contemporary touches inspired by the surrounding landscape.

A New Chapter of Hospitality

Today, the restored Manor House and Jonkershuis present 11 luxurious rooms and suites, welcoming guests back to a place steeped in history yet renewed for modern comfort. What was once a vital stop along the route between Cape Town and Stellenbosch continues its legacy as a destination of warmth, world-class wines, and timeless charm.

As CEO Roelof van den Berg reflects, this restoration is about more than rebuilding structures — it is about preserving a sense of place that carries meaning across generations.

Looking Ahead

As April marks the second anniversary of the fire, Blaauwklippen stands not only restored but reimagined. Beneath the same mountains and along the same historic paths, the estate once again opens its doors — a symbol of endurance, renewal, and the enduring power of heritage.

Then. Now. Forever.
