Although tourism is the major attraction of the Western Cape, the annual summer calendar is filled with some iconic events.
The Western Cape’s peak events period gets into full swing from October until April, with a range of events taking place across the province.
Cape Town and the Western Cape becomes the meeting spot for events such as wine and food festivals, expos and many shows – one being the Lipizzaner horses and riders showcasing choreographed music routines. Cultural events will include the Malay choir road marches and the historic 2de Nuwe Jaar Minstrel Parade.
For sports fans the calendar will include the Sanlam Cape Marathon in October, the World Rugby Seven Series in December, while cyclists will line up for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the biggest road cycling event, as well as the Cape Epic, the largest mountain bike stage race in the world, during March 2023.
The economic spin-offs from events in the Western Cape generate a ripple effect of job creation during and after events, and increase the spend at our world-famous attractions. It also enriches knowledge in hosting and creates opportunities for some of the people working on the events to initiate, and grow, their own businesses.
