Vergelegen Remains Open After Fire Damages Stables Restaurant

Vergelegen Wine Estate remains open to visitors following a fire on Tuesday that caused extensive damage to the estate’s Stables Restaurant. The restaurant, known for its thatched roof and popular dining experience, will remain closed until further notice while investigations continue.

A swift response by Vergelegen’s firefighting team, together with firefighters from the City of Cape Town, ensured the blaze was contained to the Stables building. Although the burning thatch roof resulted in significant damage to the structure, the fire did not spread to other areas of the estate.

All patrons and staff were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. Vergelegen is now working with fire investigators to determine the cause of the fire.

Estate Overwhelmed by Community Support

Vergelegen Managing Director Wayne Coetzer expressed gratitude for the support received following the incident.

“We have been truly overwhelmed by the extraordinary support shown by our neighbours and the wider community,” he said.

While the estate is still assessing the damage, it is not yet possible to confirm when the Stables Restaurant will reopen. Guests with enquiries regarding bookings can contact Vergelegen customer services for further assistance.

Wine Tastings and Visitor Experiences Continue

Despite the closure of the Stables Restaurant, Vergelegen continues to offer many of its popular experiences.

Wine tastings remain available daily, including the estate’s well-known cheese board option. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at the Rose Terrace Tea Room, browse the Potting Shed Gift Shop or stop by the nearby Creamery for ice cream and takeaway coffee.

Families visiting the estate can still make use of the play area located near the Stables Restaurant.

Seasonal Events and Activities Ahead

Several upcoming seasonal events are continuing as planned at the estate.

Children can take part in the popular Easter Egg Hunt on 5 April, with tickets going on sale from 12 March. Visitors will also be able to enjoy picnics in the scenic Camphor Forest from 19 March until the end of April.

The estate’s Harvest Celebration, scheduled for 25 March, is another highlight on the events calendar, with tickets already available.
