The Toy Library Association of South Africa (TLASA) and Scrabble teamed up in September to address the country’s growing literacy crisis. With 82% of Grade 4 learners unable to read for meaning, the collaboration aimed to make a significant impact by donating Scrabble board games to 10 Toy Libraries across South Africa, offering children a fun way to improve their literacy skills.

“This initiative promotes learning through play in underserved communities,” says Debbie Cockrell, TLASA Chairperson. She highlights the importance of using engaging tools like Scrabble to develop reading, cognitive, and problem-solving skills in children. These Toy Libraries also provide safe educational spaces for early childhood development, offering play sessions and lending services.

The introduction of Scrabble Junior will especially benefit younger children, helping them build literacy skills in an enjoyable way. By fostering a love for reading and learning, this initiative aims to lay a strong literacy foundation that children can carry through their educational journey.

Through this partnership, TLASA and Scrabble are making meaningful strides in improving literacy levels, contributing to a brighter future for South African children.
