Top Cellar Door Experience Award for Benguela Cove

Moody Lagoon Restaurant

Benguela Cove Wine Estate was commended in UK wine writer, Tim Atkin’s 10th annual South Africa Special Report. The Walker Bay wine farm won the best ‘Cellar Door Experience of the Year’ award and Medals of Excellence for all of its ten wine entries, with each wine achieving 90 or more points out of 100 for the second consecutive year.

Benguela Cove’s top achievers in the report included its Vinography Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc 2021, awarded 94 points – just one point short at 93 were its Sauvignon Blanc 2021, Sauvignon Blanc Noble Late Harvest 2020, and Vinography Chardonnay 2021.

Benguela Cove scored further success in the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards. The estate achieved a platinum medal for Vinography Chardonnay 2021; two gold medals, for its Vinography Petit Verdot 2020 and Lighthouse Collection Syrah 2020; and a silver for Lighthouse Collection Moody Lagoon 2020. The Michelangelo event is Africa’s largest wine and spirits competition, with judges selected from five different continents.
The Benguela Collection wine and hospitality group is owned by the Streeter family. It was founded by Penny Streeter OBE in 2013.

The cellar door experience at the estate includes the Moody Lagoon restaurant, recommended in the Atkin’s report, and a popular wine-tasting pontoon tour with impressive views across the serene waters of the lagoon, which is protected by a sandbar from the Atlantic Ocean. There are also cheese and chocolate pairings, winemaking experiences, and a programme of major art exhibitions, music and other year-round events, as well as children’s entertainment.

Future events in this year’s summer programme include an exceptional six-course gourmet Christmas Eve Dinner at Moody Lagoon Restaurant, say the owners, 6pm – 9pm, 24 December. Guests can also book a table for Christmas Lunch, served from 12pm – 3pm on 25 December.

Other events include the Pirate-themed Night Golf at Benguela Adventure, 6pm to 8pm from 1st December 2022. Hospitality includes ‘boerie rolls and bubbly’, craft beer on tap and picture-perfect views.

On Saturday, 10th December, visitors can see the Rooisand Wild Horses Exhibition and Conservation Talk. Guests can hear photographer and conservationist Leanne Dryburgh talk about the wild horses that still roam the striking landscape.
