Stellenbosch University (SU) recently honored the brightest stars of its entrepreneurial ecosystem at the 2026 SU Enterprises CEO Awards at 401 Rozendal. Celebrating 44 portfolio companies, the event spotlighted five standout spinouts transforming ground-breaking academic research into thriving, high-impact commercial enterprises.
A Powerhouse Driving Economic Impact
The collective power of SU’s spinout portfolio is yielding remarkable real-world results. In 2025, the university’s spinouts generated a combined turnover exceeding R630 million—marking a 23% increase from the previous year—while creating 550 jobs by April 2026. Demonstrating the robust support system provided by SU’s Innovation and Commercialisation Division, the spinout companies maintain an extraordinary five-year survival rate of 89.2%.
Five Pioneers Defining Excellence
This year’s awards highlighted five companies across distinct sectors:
TerraClim (Growth Champion Award): Leveraging climate-intelligence technology, TerraClim maps high-resolution weather data to guide critical agricultural decisions, earning praise for its stellar commercial growth and strategic execution.
Navu (Rising Star Award): Tackling assistive technology, Navu designs prosthetic knees specifically tailored to African terrain and walking patterns, enhancing mobility and restoring dignity at scale.
Biotrac Systems (Resilience Award): Honoured for deep-tech perseverance, Biotrac provides real-time microbial-monitoring technology for industrial water systems, transitioning complex lab research into a viable commercial product.
FluoroBiotech (Ecosystem Champion Award): A key player in life sciences, FluoroBiotech produces essential raw materials for biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics, vaccines, and PCR tests while fostering collaborative growth across South Africa’s biotech sector.
CubeSpace (Global Impact Award): Competing on the world stage, CubeSpace manufactures satellite control systems supplied directly to NASA, the European Space Agency, and global commercial satellite constellations.
Shaping the Future Through Collaboration
Speaking at the ceremony, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde and Cape Town Executive Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis praised SU’s role in establishing the region as an innovation hub. Mayor Hill-Lewis commended the university for setting the benchmark in research commercialization, noting that world-class ideas belong in the market rather than remaining confined to the laboratory.
SU Rector and Vice-Chancellor Prof Deresh Ramjugernath emphasized that translating research into active businesses directly fulfills the institution’s academic mission—creating jobs, boosting the economy, and solving critical challenges across Africa and beyond.
