Stellenbosch Chamber Music Festival Showcases Global Talent and Premieres

The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival (SICMF) is set to enchant audiences from 5-14 July 2024 at Stellenbosch University’s Konservatorium building. With nearly 300 student participants, the festival offers a rich daily schedule of chamber music, featuring student ensemble performances at 13:00 and 17:00 in Fismer Hall.

This year’s festival highlights include the evening concerts at Endler Hall, curated by Artistic Director Nina Schumann. Among the musical offerings are a new South African premiere of Beethoven’s fourth piano concerto, arranged from Beethoven’s era, and performed by the acclaimed pianist Emanuil Ivanov. Additionally, the program features Baroque masterpieces like Vivaldi’s concerto for violin and cello, alongside late Romantic works including Dvořák’s second piano quintet and Saint-Saëns Caprice.

The festival will also showcase world premieres and South African debuts of pieces by contemporary composers, supported by the Ernst von Siemens Foundation. Noteworthy performers returning this year include violinists Nicolas Dautricourt and Andrey Baranov, along with other distinguished musicians from around the world.

Highlighting the festival’s finale, the Festival Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Grammy® Award-winner Michael Repper, will perform significant works like Borodin’s second symphony and Dvořák’s eighth symphony, showcasing the talents of both new and returning artists on the international stage.
