St Joseph’s Intermediate Paediatric Care proudly marks its 90th anniversary, celebrating nearly a century of unwavering dedication to South Africa’s most vulnerable children. Since its founding in 1935 by the German Pallottine Sisters, the institution has evolved into a pioneering force in paediatric transitional healthcare, providing essential medical, therapeutic, and emotional support to children in need.
A Legacy of Compassion and Excellence
From its modest beginnings, St Joseph’s has grown into a specialised healthcare facility with a multidisciplinary team of 139 professionals, including nurses, therapists, care workers, and medical doctors. Their collective mission is to provide life-changing care to children who require a bridge between hospitalisation and home recovery.
“For nine decades, St Joseph’s has been a beacon of hope for thousands of children requiring transitional medical care,” says Lesley Liddle, Business Development Manager at St Joseph’s. “Our work would not be possible without the incredible support from donors, partners, and the broader community.”
A Vital Role in Paediatric Healthcare
The impact of St Joseph’s extends beyond its doors, playing a crucial role in South Africa’s healthcare system. The organisation specialises in transitional care, ensuring children with chronic illnesses, disabilities, and complex medical needs receive the continuous support required for recovery.
“The model of care that St Joseph’s provides as a bridge from hospital to home for medicallychil, at no cost to families, is remarkable and quite unique in our country,” says Sue Boucher, Programme Manager at PatchSA. “The valuable role that St Joseph’s fills within the Western Cape healthcare system cannot be overstated.”
With a strong governance structure led by a dedicated Board of Directors, St Joseph’s continues to develop innovative healthcare solutions that enhance the quality of life for children. Their holistic approach encompasses medical care, rehabilitation, emotional support, and family integration to ensure every child has the best possible chance for a brighter future.
Looking Ahead to the Future
As St Joseph’s celebrates its 90th anniversary, the institution remains committed to expanding its services and sustaining its impact for future generations. The milestone is a moment to reflect on its rich history while reinforcing the importance of continued support from the public and private sectors.
“The generosity of so many South Africans has shaped our past, sustains our present, and secures our future,” says Liddle. “Together, we can continue offering life-changing care to children who need it most.”
To honour this milestone, St Joseph’s has launched the 9 ZERO Matching Challenge, encouraging donors to pledge ZAR90, ZAR900, ZAR9,000, or even ZAR90,000 to support its mission. The initiative aims to ensure that children continue receiving the essential care they need. Additionally, supporters can gift their birthday to St Joseph’s by asking friends and family to donate in lieu of presents or help spread awareness through social media.
