Architect Don Albert has worked across the world, but it’s the small towns of the Western Cape that have inspired his latest chapter. Through his firm, Sound Space Design, he’s helping landowners, farmers, and rural investors rethink what their land can become — from boutique hotels to mixed-use estates and vibrant new town centres.
Today, rural South Africa is changing fast. Young families, remote workers, and entrepreneurs are increasingly leaving cities for space, safety, and community. At the same time, the rise of “farm-focused” tourism is creating demand for unique places to stay and explore — not just more holiday houses. Albert believes this shift is a major opportunity for landowners: “People want authentic rural experiences. If we design well, we can create places that strengthen communities and support local economies.”
Turning Land Into Long-Term Value
With farming under pressure from drought and automation, many families are looking for ways to diversify. Albert’s answer is strategic design: using a piece of land — whether a farm portion, a smallholding, or town property — to create new income streams.
His boutique “micro-hotel” project in Piketberg is one example. Instead of anonymous key-under-the-mat rentals, he focuses on small-scale hotels with strong hospitality, local food, and community interaction — the kinds of experiences visitors now crave. The same thinking applies to residential developments. Rather than repetitive gated estates, Albert designs flexible “new towns” with walkable centres, mixed-income housing, shops, and green spaces — places that feel alive, not locked away.
Global Expertise, Local Impact
Sound Space Design’s recent international awards for Portugal’s Peralta Beach Masterplan show the global relevance of this approach, but Albert’s focus remains firmly South African. His goal is simple: help rural towns grow without losing what makes them special. For landowners, the message is clear — with the right design, rural land can become a sustainable legacy for the next generation.
