September in the Western Cape Means Free Access to Nature

CapeNature

September is a month of renewal, and this year it comes with a special invitation: from 22 to 28 September 2025, South African citizens can enjoy free entry to selected national parks during SANParks Week.

More than just a cost-saving perk, SANParks Week is about reconnecting with South Africa’s natural heritage. By opening the gates to all citizens, it encourages families, students, and outdoor lovers to step outside, breathe deeply, and rediscover the beauty that makes our country unique.

The initiative applies to day visits, offering countless ways to enjoy the outdoors — from scenic drives and mountain hikes to wildlife spotting or simply pausing with a picnic under the wide skies. These are the kinds of experiences that create lasting memories, while fostering pride in our environment.

The Western Cape has plenty to showcase. Agulhas National Park lets visitors stand at the southernmost tip of Africa, while Bontebok National Park provides wide open spaces for tranquil outings. Those drawn to rugged beauty can head to Tankwa Karoo National Park, while the West Coast National Park dazzles with wildflower displays (free access 22–26 September only). Closer to the city, Table Mountain National Park opens its trails and coastal gems free from 22 to 25 September (excluding Boulders Penguin Colony and the cableway).

SANParks Week is more than recreation — it’s a chance to learn, restore your sense of wellness, and support local tourism. By making nature accessible, it reminds us of the heritage we share and the responsibility we carry to protect it.

So, pack a picnic, grab your ID, and take a break in the wild this September. The best part? Entry is on the house.
