February 2023 marks the 364th anniversary of the South African wine industry, as recorded in Jan van Riebeeck’s diary on 2 February 1659: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes.”
South Africa invites all with a passion for wine – from producers to social sippers – to raise their glasses to South Africa’s rich wine heritage.
The Wine Harvest Commemorative Event
On 2 February the Groot Constantia Wine Estate hosts this annual event, where the wine industry recognises its trailblazers. Over the years, many greats have been honoured, such as Nelson Mandela, the Unsung Wine Workers, and, in 2022, Carmen Stevens, Denise Stubbs, Francois Viljoen and Christine Rudman were added to this group of outstanding leaders.
