In the heart of South Africa’s breathtaking winemaking landscape, an event unfolded at the Hazendal Wine Estate on September 16, 2023. The South African Sommeliers Association (SASA) proudly crowned Jean-Vincent Ridon of Sommelier’s Academy as the winner of the prestigious Best Sommelier of South Africa 2023 title. It was a day filled with inspiration, perseverance, and the sweet taste of victory.

SASA Chairman Spencer Fondaumiere described this occasion as “monumental.” Jean-Vincent Ridon’s journey to this coveted title was one of unwavering perseverance, determination, and unshakeable self-belief. It was a journey that spanned four attempts, but he never gave up on his dream. His story is a testament to the indomitable human spirit, a shining example that when you set your sights on a goal and relentlessly pursue it, success is not a matter of ‘if,’ but ‘when.’

Mr. Fondaumiere also acknowledged the contributions Ridon has made to the industry, reminding us that individual success often leads to the betterment of the whole. Jean-Vincent’s victory serves as a beacon of hope and motivation for aspiring sommeliers across the nation, a reminder that with dedication and passion, you can achieve the extraordinary.

In an Instagram post, Ridon expressed his joy and gratitude, saying, “Needless to say, I am very happy today. I have been running after this title since 2016. Competing at this level has been an enlightening journey and a truly humbling experience. Thanks to all those who have been supporting me to achieve this goal. I owe them so much.” His words echo the sentiment that the journey to success is as meaningful as the destination itself.

The competition was fierce, as it always is among the best in any field. Laurie Cooper of Abingdon Wine Estate in KZN secured the runner-up position, and Tapiwa Jamu of Ivory Manor Boutique Hotel in Pretoria claimed third place.

The judging panel, included esteemed figures such as Jo Wessels, Wikus Human, Wayve Kolevsohn, and Chef Callan Austin, recognized the world-class talent on display.

Jean-Vincent Ridon’s victory comes with an array of distinguished prizes, including the inaugural Michael Ratcliffe Award, a Coravin from Great Domaines, brandy from the SA Brandy Foundation, a €5,000 grant from the IWSC, an invitation to judge at the IWSC in London in 2024, and wines from Stellenbosch Wine Routes, our long-standing partner, and media partner, Wine.co.za.

Speaking on behalf of Stellenbosch Wine Routes, Elmarie Rabe emphasized the importance of this competition as a celebration of South Africa’s excellence in wine and hospitality. It’s more than just a contest; it’s a reflection of the passion and dedication of the people behind South Africa’s wine industry.

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of sponsors Amorim Cork South Africa, Winterhalter, and WWF Conservation Champions, who played a vital role in making this celebration of excellence a reality.

Jean-Vincent Ridon’s journey to becoming the Best Sommelier of South Africa 2023 is an inspiring tale of persistence, determination, and the unwavering belief in the pursuit of one’s dreams. It’s a reminder that success is not determined by the number of times you stumble, but by your determination to rise each time. As we celebrate his victory, let us all be inspired to chase our dreams with the same passion, knowing that with dedication and perseverance, we can achieve greatness.
