South African theatre audiences are just weeks away from falling in love all over again as Pretty Woman: The Musical prepares to make its long-awaited local debut in March 2026. Based on the iconic 1990 romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, the lavish stage adaptation opens at Artscape Theatre in Cape Town on 18 March, before moving to Montecasino’s Teatro in Johannesburg from 24 April. Brimming with romance, humour and nostalgia, the production is set to be one of the most anticipated musical events of the year.
A Classic Love Story Reimagined
At the heart of Pretty Woman: The Musical is the beloved story of Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis — two people from vastly different worlds whose chance meeting leads to an unforgettable romance. The musical stays true to the charm and emotional warmth of the original film while expanding the story through energetic choreography, glamorous costumes and spectacular staging. It is a joyful celebration of love, transformation and taking a leap of faith.
A Hit-Filled Score by Bryan Adams
The musical features music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Bryan Adams, alongside his longtime collaborator Jim Vallance. The score blends pop, rock and sweeping ballads that reflect both the romance and humour of the story. Audiences will also recognise the legendary title song, “Oh, Pretty Woman”, written by Roy Orbison and Bill Dee — the classic hit that inspired the original film and remains instantly recognisable decades later.
An International Hit Arrives Locally
Since its Broadway premiere in 2018, Pretty Woman: The Musical has enjoyed acclaimed runs in London’s West End and tours across North America and Europe. Praised for its high-energy ensemble numbers, dazzling costumes and polished production values, the musical has proven to be a global crowd-pleaser. Now, South African audiences will experience the magic firsthand in a production that combines international creative expertise with local talent.
An All-South African Cast Takes the Stage
The South African production features an entirely local cast, crew and band, highlighting the depth of musical theatre talent in the country. Leading the cast as Vivian Ward is award-winning performer Leah Mari, whose recent stage work includes My Fair Lady and Chicago. Opposite her, Christopher Jaftha stars as Edward Lewis, bringing charisma and versatility to the role. They are joined by a strong supporting cast and ensemble of accomplished performers.
A World-Class Creative Team
Produced by Showtime Management in association with Crossroads Live North America, the musical features a book by Garry Marshall and J. F. Lawton, the original creators of the film, with direction and choreography by Tony Award® winner Jerry Mitchell. A collaborative creative team from New York and South Africa works together to deliver a visually spectacular and emotionally uplifting production.
