The wait is officially over. This morning, Thursday, 5 March, the Lifecycle Expo at DHL Stadium opened its doors to the first of an expected 35,000 visitors, signaling the start of the 48th Cape Town Cycle Tour. For the 30,000 riders currently collecting their race packs, this Sunday represents more than just a ride; it is a historic debut as the event officially joins the prestigious UCI Gran Fondo World Series.
A Global “Golden Ticket”
By joining the UCI circuit, the Cape Town Cycle Tour now serves as a primary qualifier for the World Championships in Niseko, Japan, later this August. The stakes are higher than ever: the top 25% of finishers in each age category will earn their spot on the global stage, cementing the Mother City’s reputation as a world-class sporting destination.
The Expo: Where the “Gees” Begins
The DHL Stadium is currently the high-energy heart of the city. Beyond mandatory registration, the Expo features over 80 exhibitors showcasing the latest in cycling tech and nutrition. If you’re heading there today or tomorrow, skip the parking headache—the City has activated a free MyCiTi shuttle running between the CTICC and the stadium for all attendees.
Thursday & Friday: 09:30/09:00 – 19:00
Saturday: 09:00 – 16:00
Entry: Free for riders; R50 for non-participants (under 12s are free).
Sunday’s Showdown: The Routes
The flagship 109km route kicks off at the Grand Parade from 06:16 AM, taking riders on the legendary loop through Smitswinkel, Chapman’s Peak, and the dreaded Suikerbossie. Meanwhile, the 42km route begins at 10:00 AM, offering a spirited, slightly more “lifestyle-friendly” experience through the southern suburbs via the M3.
Resident Watch: Road Closures
Residents are advised to plan ahead as the City deploys a massive safety contingent. Chapman’s Peak Drive closes at 18:00 this Saturday. In the CBD, Castle Street will be restricted from 19:00 Friday for gantry construction, with “hard closures” affecting the M3, N2 outbound, and Hospital Bend throughout Sunday.
Spectator Hotspots
For those not in the saddle, the best vibe is at Noordhoek Farm Village or the finish line festival at the Green Point Precinct. To help fans get around, PRASA is running special “Cycle Trains” on Sunday—a bargain at R20 for spectators.
Whether you’re chasing a UCI qualification or just a finish-line boerewors roll, the 48th edition is set to be a vibrant celebration of health, community, and the spirit of the Cape.
