OUTsurance Gun Run – A firm favourite on SA sport events calendar

OUTsurance Gun

Entries are now open for one of the Western Cape’s largest running events, the OUTsurance Gun Run which is hosted by the Atlantic Athletic Club and is taking place for the 29th time, on the weekend of 16-17 September 2023.

The weekend of running and walking activities offers a choice of 5 different exercise options to participate in. A 17.8km Trail Run, a 10km run / walk and a 5km Pet Walk with your furry friends will take place on Saturday, 16 September.

The following day Sunday, 17 September is when the flagship half-marathon will be staged and also the very popular 5km fun run which caters for all levels of runners and walkers as well as their families who prefer a shorter distance.

Carl Louw, Chief Marketing Officer at OUTsurance says: “The overwhelming support of the public has been a key driving force behind the growth and success of the OUTsurance Gun Run. So much so, that it has now become a firm favourite on the South African sport events calendar.”

“Last year, we introduced a brand-new event in the form of a 5km pet walk where you could enter your four-legged family members to join in the fun. Based on the tremendous amount of positive feedback we’ve received from the public; pet owners will be pleased to know that this event is here to stay! Other event favourites include the 21km half-marathon, 10km race, 17.8km trail run and 5km fun run.  Whatever event you choose, it’s sure to be an epic weekend!”

The 17.8km Trail Run starts in Van Riebeeck Park on the lower slopes of Table Mountain, with the trail runners all aiming to beat the firing of the Noon Day Gun. All the other events will start in Vlei Road.

The Greenpoint common fields adjacent to the Athletics Stadium and Cricket Club, is where all the events will finish. In addition to lots of music, food and beverages being available at the finish area, this is where the official prize giving ceremony will take place.

Substantial prize money is on offer once again, with the winners of the half marathon distance each receiving R25 000-00. The 10km and Trail Run participants will also qualify for prize money.

Both champions from the 2022 Half Marathon distance, namely Fortunate Chidzivo and Ashley Smith, will be participating again this year and defending their titles.

The official charity and main beneficiary for the Gun Run weekend of activities is the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa. Visit the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa website: https://awscape.org.za/ to donate, volunteer or obtain more information.
