In the scenic surroundings of Dana Bay, a small community rallies behind 6-year-old Stehan, a spirited boy battling his second round of cancer at Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town. After triumphing over neuroblastoma in 2022, Stehan now faces a gruelling fight against leukemia, diagnosed this past April.
Leading the charge is Ronél Steyn, an ambassador for Cupcakes of Hope, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting children with cancer. Ronél, who now resides in France, remains deeply connected to her South African roots, returning twice yearly and maintaining her commitment to childhood cancer advocacy. Ronél’s journey, from research scientist to Olympic torchbearer in France, underscores her dedication. During the Olympic torch relay, she carried a photo of Stehan, symbolizing her drive to shine a light on the battles these young warriors face.
“Carrying the torch was an unforgettable experience, filled with intense happiness and sadness,” Ronél reflects. “I carry this flame with a special thought to all the innocent children facing cancer, especially those in South Africa.”
Now, Ronél is spearheading a formidable fundraising initiative, “6K for Stehan,” aiming to raise R600,000 for a critical chemotherapy treatment that represents Stehan’s best hope for recovery. The event encourages participants worldwide to cover six kilometres by any means – walking, running, swimming, or even spending time in the gym – to contribute to Stehan’s cause. Set to launch in conjunction with the Olympic Games in Paris, the campaign has already garnered support from several athletes.
This virtual race isn’t just about fundraising; it’s a testament to the power of community and the impact of collective action. “The idea is that anyone can be a champion,” says Ronél, emphasizing the inclusivity and fun of the event. With no age or time limits, the initiative embodies the spirit of perseverance and hope that Stehan’s story inspires.
