The House and Garden Designer of the Year (DOTY) Awards for 2024 have shone a light on exceptional talent across various creative disciplines. Among this year’s honorees, landscape designer Leon Kluge has emerged as a force in his field, taking home the coveted Landscape Designer of the Year award. His work, marked by an inspired blend of innovation, sustainability, and deep reverence for nature, reflects a lifelong connection to the natural world that began in his own family.
For Kluge, designing landscapes has always been more than just placing plants in a space; it’s about creating a narrative where nature is the main character. His roots run deep, growing up in the renowned Lowveld National Botanical Gardens in Nelspruit, where his father was the curator, and spending time with his grandfather, curator of Betty’s Bay Botanical Garden. Surrounded by some of South Africa’s most striking and diverse plant life, Kluge absorbed not only a knowledge of horticulture but also an understanding of the symbiosis between plants and their environment.
Kluge’s portfolio, filled with celebrity clients and global recognition, reached new heights at the 2024 RHS Chelsea Flower Show. His creation, The Cape Flora of South Africa, a collaboration with Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, was a visual symphony of South Africa’s unique fynbos. This display earned him three prestigious awards: Gold, Best Exhibit in the Great Pavilion, and the New Design Award, a historic win for South Africa. His fynbos extravaganza not only captured the beauty of indigenous plants but also highlighted his ability to create designs that inspire both awe and environmental consciousness.
What sets Leon Kluge apart is his approach to design. He doesn’t rely on books or trends for inspiration; instead, he immerses himself in nature. Hiking through the mountains, he observes plants growing in their natural habitats, witnessing firsthand how they interact with the landscape. “Nature is my greatest teacher,” Kluge often says.
