Knysna Oyster Festival 2025: Come Out of Your Shell for 10 Days of Food, Fun and Festivities

Knysna Oyster Festival

South Africa’s favourite winter celebration, the Knysna Oyster Festival, returns from 4 to 13 July 2025 for its 42nd edition — and it promises to be bigger, tastier, and more action-packed than ever. With the theme “It’s time to come out of your shell,” the festival invites visitors from all over the country to experience ten unforgettable days of gourmet food, thrilling sport, and family entertainment set against the beautiful backdrop of the Garden Route.

A Feast for Food Lovers

At its core, the Knysna Oyster Festival is a food-lover’s paradise. This year’s programme features a variety of culinary events designed to cater to every taste. The festivities kick off with the Exclusive Burger & Beer Indoor Street Party on 4 July, where artisanal burgers meet craft beers in a vibrant indoor market atmosphere. That same evening, the Carbo-Loading Pasta Evening at Island Café in Thesen Harbour Town offers a delicious way for runners to prepare for the weekend’s sporting events.

Wine enthusiasts can enjoy the Knysna Fine Wine Festival at Simola Hotel on both 4 and 5 July, with tastings from 25 of South Africa’s top wineries. And for those with a sweet tooth, the Dessert War Fair on 9 July showcases an irresistible variety of treats.

Oyster fans will be spoilt for choice at the Stella Artois Oyster Hotspots located throughout Knysna. From classic freshly shucked oysters at 34 South, to gourmet offerings like G&T-infused oysters at Daniela’s, and fried BBQ oysters at Blackwaters River Lodge, there’s an oyster experience to suit every palate.

Thrilling Sporting Action

Beyond the food, the festival offers an extensive sporting calendar catering to athletes and casual participants alike. The iconic Knysna Forest Marathon and Half Marathon takes place on 5 July, guiding runners through the mystical indigenous forest. For trail runners, the Houtkapper Trail Run on 6 July promises scenic mountain paths and forested singletracks.

Cyclists can gear up for the Knysna Cycle Tour, a three-day event beginning on 11 July. Riders can choose from forest Enduro races, mountain bike routes through Simola, and exciting road races for all ages on 13 July.

Water sports enthusiasts won’t be disappointed either, with the Canoe Polo Tournament on 5 July and the Harbour 2 Heads Lagoon Challenge on 13 July offering unique paddling challenges.

Family Fun and Community Spirit

The Knysna Oyster Festival is also packed with family-friendly events, including the Oyster Festival Country Market at Totties Farm Kitchen, the RAP Knysna Colour Run, and two Saturday Parkruns. For a unique twist, the Amazing Race – Knysna Style on 9 July provides a fun, clue-solving adventure for teams of all ages.

Knysna Executive Mayor, Councillor Thando Matika, sums up the spirit of the festival: “Whether you’re here for the oysters, the races, or just a great family holiday, we can’t wait to see you.”
