After nearly a decade at the helm of South Africa’s premier wine region, Michael Ratcliffe has officially stepped down as chairperson of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes board. Taking up the mantle is respected industry icon Jean Engelbrecht of Rust en Vrede.
Announced at the organisation’s annual general meeting on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, the handover marks much more than a routine boardroom reshuffle. It represents a pivotal transition point for a 55-year-old institution balancing deep-seated heritage with the rapid demands of modern global tourism.
A Nine-Year Legacy of Resilience and Pride
Ratcliffe’s nine-year tenure was defined by structural evolution and collective resilience. Steering the organisation through global market shifts and the unprecedented turbulence of the pandemic era, his leadership focused heavily on building regional confidence and unifying local producers.
Reflecting on his departure, Ratcliffe emphasized the communal pride that defined his time in office. “What I treasure most is the way our wine and tourism community has come together, with growing confidence in our wines and pride in the place we call home,” he shared. Handing over to his long-time colleague, Ratcliffe expressed absolute trust in Engelbrecht’s vision: “There is much to protect and so much still to achieve together.”
Deep Roots in Stellenbosch History
For Jean Engelbrecht, taking charge of South Africa’s oldest official wine route—established in 1971—is both a professional responsibility and a personal full-circle moment.
“As a child, I was fortunate to know its founding members, Frans Malan of Simonsig, Spatz Sperling of Delheim and Neil Joubert of Spier,” Engelbrecht recalled. With his family estate, Rust en Vrede, joining the network in the late 1970s, Engelbrecht brings decades of firsthand immersion into the region’s DNA. His focus is clear: ensuring Stellenbosch retains its global standing while adapting to next-generation wine travelers. “I look forward to building on the successes of the past, and to ensuring that Stellenbosch remains relevant and firmly established as a world-class destination.”
A Powerhouse Board for 2027
To navigate this new era, Engelbrecht will lead an exceptional cabinet of South African wine leaders. The newly constituted 2027 board features executive and winemaking heavyweights from across the region’s five sub-routes, including Vice Chair Amanda de Klerk, Louw Strydom (Kanonkop), Frans Smit (Spier), Bruwer Raats (Raats Family Wines), and pioneer Ntsiki Biyela (Aslina Wines).
As global travel preferences shift toward authentic, terroir-driven experiences, this formidable leadership team ensures that Stellenbosch enters its next chapter not just protecting its rich heritage, but actively shaping the future of African wine culture.
