An ancient winemaking tradition is making a remarkable comeback, and South Africa is celebrating this revival with the country’s first-ever Amphora Wine Festival on Saturday, 29 August. The inaugural event will bring together winemakers, wine lovers, and industry experts to celebrate the return of one of the oldest vessels ever used in the making of wine. Hosted by Wine Machinery Group (WMG), the festival will take place from 10:00 to 14:00 at the historic Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West.
The Magic of Clay
For thousands of years, clay amphorae were used by ancient civilisations to ferment, age, and store wine. Over time, these traditional vessels were largely replaced by wooden barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless steel. Today, however, winemakers across the globe are rediscovering handcrafted terracotta amphorae, drawn to the unique qualities they bring to wine. Many believe that clay allows for a more natural expression of the grape, creating wines with distinctive texture, purity, and a strong sense of place.
South Africa’s Growing Movement
South Africa has quietly become part of this international movement over the past decade. While amphora winemaking was once a niche practice, more local producers have embraced the vessel, experimenting with different varieties, fermentation techniques, and styles. The growth in the number and diversity of South African amphora wines has now reached a point where the country can host a festival dedicated entirely to this fascinating tradition.
Festival Highlights & Special Guests
The Amphora Wine Festival South Africa will feature more than 30 wineries from across the Western Cape, showcasing their unique amphora wines and offering visitors the rare opportunity to taste an exceptional collection of these limited-production wines together in one place. Wines will also be available for purchase directly from the producers on the day.
The festival will also welcome two internationally renowned guests: Pedro Ribeiro, founder of Portugal’s celebrated Amphora Wine Festival and owner of Herdade do Rocim, who will share his experience of building one of the world’s leading amphora wine events; and Federico Manetti, whose family has been crafting terracotta for generations, produces the Manetti amphorae, and whose acclaimed winery, Fontodi, will also be represented.
Alongside tastings, guests will enjoy engaging discussions throughout the day exploring the history of amphora winemaking, the craftsmanship behind the vessels, the influence of clay on wine style, and why modern winemakers are returning to this ancient practice.
