The inaugural Garden Route Giro burst into life with an aggressive and action-packed opening stage, as Marco Joubert and Mariëlle Trouwborst claimed victory and pulled on the first leaders’ jerseys in the men’s and women’s races respectively.

Despite covering a relatively short 73km route through the rolling terrain of the Hessequa region, Stage 1 delivered high speeds, early drama, and decisive breakaways that set the tone for the days ahead.

Early Breakaway Defines Men’s Race

The men’s race quickly turned into a tactical battle after a fast start from Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar. Following a rapid descent where riders reached speeds of up to 90km/h, the race split on the first gravel sector, with an early crash disrupting the peloton.

The defining move came on the opening climb, where Joubert attacked over the summit, forcing a selection that left him alongside Wessel Botha and Cronje Beukes. The trio worked efficiently together, taking advantage of a tailwind and hesitation in the chasing group to steadily extend their lead.

Joubert proved the strongest throughout the day, claiming the sprint hotspot and the King of the Mountain points before edging clear in the final kilometres. Despite briefly misjudging the finish, he held on to secure victory and gain an early advantage in the general classification.

Tactical Patience Pays Off in Women’s Race

In the women’s race, Trouwborst delivered a composed and tactical performance to take the stage win. After an early move saw her out front, Lisa Bone and Vera Looser bridged across to form a leading trio that gradually distanced the chasing group.

Behind them, a group including Cherise Willeit and Yolande de Villiers was unable to close the gap, despite sharing the workload with riders from the men’s race.

Looser claimed the sprint points and Bone the Queen of the Mountain honours, but it was Trouwborst who timed her effort to perfection. On the final climb, Bone attacked, with only Trouwborst able to follow. The pair then worked together to extend their advantage before Trouwborst surged ahead in the closing sprint to secure the win and the first yellow jersey.

Fast, Flowing Start Through Hessequa

Stage 1’s undulating route and 950 metres of climbing provided a scenic yet competitive introduction to the Garden Route Giro. The course, winding from Jakkalsvlei Private Cellar to Oakdale Agricultural High School near Riversdale, showcased the region’s farmland while still encouraging aggressive racing.

While the stage profile suited fast riders, the combination of gravel sectors, high speeds, and technical sections ensured there was little room for error.

Tougher Test Awaits on Stage 2

If the opening stage was about speed and positioning, Stage 2 promises a far sterner challenge. Riders will tackle a 119km route featuring 2,000 metres of climbing, including the demanding ascent of Rooiberg Pass.

With longer climbs and technical descents set to test both endurance and skill, the general classification battle is expected to intensify.

For now, Joubert and Trouwborst hold the early advantage—but with the Garden Route Giro only just underway, the race is wide open.
