The inaugural Garden Route Giro came to a spectacular close on Saturday, 18 April 2026, as Cronje Beukes and Mariëlle Trouwborst stamped their authori

ty on the race one final time with commanding victories on the last stage.

After nearly a week of intense gravel racing, the final 75km stage from Knysna to Wilderness was expected to favour a sprint finish—but the race leaders had other plans.

Early Attacks Set the Tone

From the moment racing began after a neutral rollout along the Knysna Lagoon, Beukes made his intentions clear. Riding without strong team support, he opted for an aggressive strategy—turning the stage into a test of pure strength.

On the approach to Phantom Pass, he increased the tempo before launching a decisive attack on the climb. Within kilometres, only his closest rivals could respond, but even they were unable to hold his wheel for long. By the summit, Beukes was alone, powering toward a solo victory that perfectly capped his race-winning performance.

Solo Strength Secures the Title

Behind him, the chasing group regrouped and shifted focus to the battle for the remaining podium places. With Beukes out of reach, the race for second came down to a tactical sprint, where Ignatius du Preez edged out Marco Joubert.

The stage result confirmed Beukes as the overall champion, finishing the race with a comfortable margin of eight minutes and 28 seconds. His climbing ability proved decisive throughout the event, earning him not only the yellow jersey but also the climbers’ classification honours.

Trouwborst Dominates Women’s Race

In the women’s race, Trouwborst delivered an equally impressive performance to seal both the stage and overall victory.

Starting the day with a significant lead, she wasted no time in asserting control—breaking away on the early slopes of Phantom Pass. Her strength on the climbs once again proved unmatched, allowing her to extend her advantage and take the race out of a tactical contest early.

Even when linking up with riders from the men’s field, Trouwborst maintained her pace all the way to the finish, crossing the line clear of her rivals.

Strong Finish Behind the Leaders

While Trouwborst rode to a dominant victory, the battle behind her added intrigue to the finale. Lisa Bone secured second place overall with another consistent ride, while Vera Looser rounded out the podium.

Further back, the fight for stage positions remained competitive, highlighting the depth of talent in the field and the relentless nature of the race.

A Memorable First Edition

The Garden Route Giro’s debut has firmly established it as one of South Africa’s premier gravel stage races. From high-speed opening stages to mountain-top battles and dramatic weather conditions, the event delivered a compelling mix of endurance, tactics, and spectacle.

With both Beukes and Trouwborst claiming emphatic victories on the final day, their overall triumphs felt fully deserved—built on consistency, strength, and perfectly timed attacks across all six stages.

As the curtain falls on the inaugural edition, the Garden Route Giro leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable moments—and sets the stage for an even bigger return next year.
