The economic pulse of Oudtshoorn and the surrounding Klein Karoo has received a major lifeline with the official reopening of the R328 Cango Caves Road. The vital route had been completely blocked since a massive rockfall on 9 May 2026, which dumped over 7,100 tons of debris onto the tarmac. For nearly two months, this closure physically isolated the region’s primary tourism pipeline. Now, the clearance of the road comes as a monumental relief, particularly because the winter school holidays are in full swing, and local operators are eager to roll out the red carpet for families and travellers once again.

A Devastating Two-Month Hit to Local Hospitality

As the undisputed anchor of tourism in the Klein Karoo, any interruption to the Cango Caves sends immediate shockwaves through the local ecosystem. The past two months have been exceptionally trying for the agricultural and hospitality venues dotted along the R328, all of which bore the brunt of this sudden isolation. Local guest houses, boutique lodges, and world-renowned ostrich farms saw their bookings evaporate overnight as domestic and international travellers were forced to reroute or cancel their itineraries entirely.

Among those hardest hit were iconic family destinations and businesses located directly along the pass, such as Wilgewandel Holiday Farm, the welcoming Swartberg Country Manor and Kobus se Gat. Situated right on the route toward the caves and the Swartberg Pass, these beloved tourist hubs rely entirely on the steady flow of traffic heading up the valley. Whether it was families stopping for camel rides at Wilgewandel, travelers looking for a genuine braai experience and traditional Karoo cuisine at Kobus se Gat, or guests booking scenic mountain stays, these establishments suddenly found themselves on a road to nowhere. The entire local hospitality sector along the R328—which sustains countless local jobs—faced immense pressure as passing trade completely dried up during the quiet winter weeks.

Perfect Timing for the Last Part of School Holidays

The lifting of the total roadblock on Friday, 10 July, could not have come at a better moment. According to the official Western Cape school calendar, public school learners are scheduled to head back for the start of the third term on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. This means families still have one final, crucial week to pack their bags and head out for a winter getaway.

The++expressed absolute delight at the reopening, noting that the return of visitor access is the exact economic spark the region needs to shake off a painful winter slump. Having the road clear means that families looking for last-minute holiday day trips can once again experience the full spectrum of what the area has to offer. Children can enjoy outdoor activities and a genuine farm atmosphere, while parents can unwind in the fresh country air before heading underground to marvel at the geological wonders of the caves.

Moving Forward Safely

While the route is open and the businesses are ready, a temporary Stop/Go system is in place as a standard precaution while engineers put the finishing touches on the surrounding rock slopes.

For the guest houses, tourist hot spots, and farms like Wilgewandel that stand as the backbone of the Klein Karoo, the message to the public is loud and clear: Oudtshoorn and its communities are fully open for business. Local hospitality owners urge travellers to take advantage of the remaining school holidays, support local trade, and rediscover the unmatched magic of the Cango Caves valley.

Daily Operating Times for the R328

To ensure public safety while ongoing rockfall mitigation continues, the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has implemented the following daily operating hours for the road:
