Exhibition Featuring Renowned Schulptor Charles Gotthard

Charles Gotthard, born in 1951 in South Africa, is a renowned sculptor celebrated for his ability to infuse life and emotion into his works. Qualified in architectural ceramics at Johannesburg College of Art, he honed the skills that have propelled him to a successful career in sculpting.

Gotthard’s artistic journey is characterized by his profound ability to reflect themes of nature, human experience, and cultural influences through his sculptures. His pieces are known for their intricate detail and thought-provoking designs, captivating viewers and inviting them to ponder deeper meanings.

His artworks are prominently displayed in the state theatre in Pretoria, as well as in civic centres in Louis Trichardt, Rustenburg, Mogale City, and Brits. Notably, his ceramics are featured in revered art publications, including “Looking at South African Art” by Frieda Harmsen and “Potters of Southern Africa” by Garth Clark.

For six years, Gotthard served as the principal sculptor at Steyn City. His impact extends beyond South Africa, having participated in a group exhibition of South African ceramic artists in Munich.

From 7–10 December 2024, Dunstone Estate will host a highly anticipated event featuring the internationally acclaimed South African sculptor Charles Gotthard. This exclusive showcase celebrates Gotthard’s artistic legacy and provides a rare opportunity for guests to engage directly with the artist. The event will span four days of immersive activities, including an exhibition of Gotthard’s latest works, live sculpting demonstrations, and a hands-on clay workshop. Designed to inspire art enthusiasts and families alike, the event underscores the estate’s commitment to fostering creativity and honouring the profound impact of contemporary art on culture and community.

Exhibition – The event will open with an exclusive exhibition on 7 December, where guests will have the unique opportunity to meet Gotthard and explore his latest sculptures. This intimate setting allows attendees to engage with the artist, discuss his creative process, and delve into the deeper meanings behind his work.

Place du Tertre Experience – During the event, the A.R.T Gallery at Dunstone will transform into a space reminiscent of Paris’ famed Place du Tertre, known for its vibrant artistic atmosphere. Visitors will enjoy family-friendly activities, live demonstrations, and immersive art experiences throughout the weekend. On 8 December, Gotthard will showcase his sculpting techniques, offering art enthusiasts the chance to watch a master at work.

Hands-On Clay Workshop – For those eager to get hands-on, a two-day clay workshop will be held on 9 – 10 December. This exclusive workshop, led by Gotthard himself, provides participants with the rare opportunity to learn sculpting techniques directly from a master artist. The workshop, priced at R2500 per person, promises a deep dive into the world of sculpture, allowing attendees to create their own works of art.
