On Saturday, 12 October 2024, the Western Cape Mobility Department, in collaboration with the Swartland Municipality, successfully hosted the Malmesbury Bicycle Day, an inspiring event dedicated to promoting sustainable and accessible transport. The event was a celebration of community empowerment, improved mobility, and road safety.
Western Cape Minister of Mobility, Isaac Silkeu, highlighted the significance of the day, noting, “This event is part of the Provincial Sustainable Transport Programme (PSTP), which aims to promote safe, sustainable, and accessible transport for all communities.” In partnership with the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN), the department officially handed over bicycles to community members as part of a key initiative to improve mobility and promote eco-friendly transport options in the area.
A major highlight of the day was the Bicycle Distribution Project (BDP), where bicycles were distributed to deserving residents, enhancing mobility for scholars and vulnerable individuals. Attendees also enjoyed free bicycle repairs, mechanic training, and road safety demonstrations.
World-class trails rider, Dylan Victor, wowed the crowd with his thrilling skills, adding excitement to an already vibrant day. Filled with entertainment, competitions, and refreshments, the Malmesbury Bicycle Day was a powerful reminder of how bicycles can transform lives, fostering sustainable mobility and hope for the community.
