EARTHBOX: A journey into the earth

Earthbox

In the Western Cape’s Lourensford Wine Estate, a remarkable underground exhibition called EARTHBOX is captivating visitors. This 24-meter-long chamber, situated five metres beneath the surface, is an innovative creation by The Dream Commission.

EARTHBOX is not just an art installation; it’s a journey into the depths of the earth, offering a rare glimpse into the hidden world beneath our feet.

The idea for EARTHBOX was born from a desire to forge a deeper connection between humans and the earth. It emphasizes the importance of soil in our lives – from growing our food to being our final resting place – yet it’s often overlooked. The Dream Commission, spearheaded by Busse and her colleague Baard, aimed to rekindle a sense of wonder towards the earth, an element we seldom explore compared to oceans and space.

EARTHBOX is located on a previously farmed field at Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West. The exhibit reveals three layers of soil – topsoil, transported soils, and iron-rich lateritic soils – each unique in colour and composition. Visitors can directly touch and feel the earth, experiencing its textures.

The construction of EARTHBOX was no small feat. It involved the collaboration of engineers, environmentalists, geologists, artists, and designers. Among them was engineer Henry Fagan, known for his work on the Boomslang tree canopy walkway and the Bosjes Chapel. The team faced challenges like shifting groundwater levels and had to implement an intricate drainage system to maintain the structure.

EARTHBOX isn’t just about observing; it’s an immersive experience. It hosts yoga and meditation sessions, musical events, and aims to be more than just an attraction. It invites visitors to slow down and connect with the earth in a tangible, meaningful way. The absence of sunlight and sound in the chamber enhances this experience, encouraging visitors to be fully present and engaged.

This project is temporary, open from November 2023 to April 2024. Afterwards, the soil will be returned to its original place, and the materials used will be repurposed. EARTHBOX represents a unique intersection of art, experience, and environmental consciousness. It’s a space for reflection and reconnection, reminding us of our profound bond with the earth beneath our feet.
