As an indicator of a busy summer event season for Cape Town, the Mother City is this week hosting two major international events starting with the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Elite 16 and ending the week off with the Red Bull Box Cart Race.

The iconic Grand Parade is showcasing its versatility as an events venue as it hosts the Volleyball World Pro Tour Elite 16 which got under way this morning.

A section of 15 916 square metre space has been transformed into a beach volleyball court which will be used for the competition over the next six days.

The Elite 16 features 64 of the world’s top volleyball athletes competing to be crowned champions on Sunday, 6 November 2022.

‘Cape Town already has a versatile annual events calendar which sees the city hosting events all year round. Adding a major international volleyball tour event to the mix is a stamp on the City’s capability and  status as a renowned global events destination. The Grand Parade, as a popular outdoor venue, is a fantastic choice for this event, having played host to a variety of events over the years and now with a faux beach is an extra spike to the facility’s reputation,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.

With the City Hall and Table Mountain as the backdrop for the games, Cape Town offers unique picturesque views for the crowd and those watching on broadcast.

Games take place daily this week between 09:00 and 21:00 on most days and then 13:00 to 17:00 for the Finals on Sunday.

Red Bull Box Cart Race

On Sunday, 6 November 2022, less than  two kilometres from the Grand Parade, the bold, the daring and the bananas will brave the slopes of the Bo-Kaap with the wackiest non-motorised rides for the Red Bull Box Cart Race.

On the day, 57 teams will have to navigate a 594 metre  steep road in one of Cape Town’s most iconic and historic neighbourhoods.

In addition to the fun and wild excitement of the race, spectators can also look forward to a fan park with food trucks, hydration stations, seating areas and tons of entertainment.

‘The Bo-Kaap holds a special place in the history of this city as one of the oldest residential neighbourhoods in Cape Town. With its beautiful, colourful houses, great views of Signal Hill and sloping roads, it is the perfect location for the Red Bull Box Cart Race. We are looking forward to seeing thousands of spectators line up along the roads in the Bo-Kaap for this incredible fun race. Hosting these two events this week is a wonderful precursor for what will be a spectacular summer of events in Cape Town,’ said Alderman Smith.

Residents and motorists are advised of the temporary road closures leading up to the event and during the event.
