Distance For Difference: 20 Years of Creating Opportunities for vulnerable children

Distance For Difference

This year, Distance For Difference (D4D) celebrates 20 years of changing lives. Since its founding in 2005, the organisation has raised more than R13 million for over 60 children’s charities, opening doors of opportunity for vulnerable children across South Africa. From education and healthcare to sport and mentorship, D4D has helped turn challenges into new beginnings.

Running, Riding, and Giving Back

To mark the milestone, D4D is inviting the public to join two special fundraising events that combine fitness, fun, and community spirit.

On Heritage Day, 24 September 2025, the Gratitude Run returns to Dornier Wines in Stellenbosch. Participants can enjoy a fun run, walk, or trail run through scenic vineyards, celebrating both South Africa’s heritage and two decades of D4D’s impact. Each entry helps fund brighter futures, proving that every step makes a difference.

Then, from 18–19 October 2025, the spotlight shifts to Somerset West for THE500 24-Hour Cycling and Spinning Challenge at De Hoop Primary. Cyclists will push themselves to cover 500km in 24 hours, while teams, schools, and businesses can join the high-energy spinning challenge.

With the new Team of Two format and the legendary 24-hour spinning marathon, the event promises excitement, endurance, and unforgettable camaraderie for a good cause.

A Legacy of Hope

Reflecting on the journey, founder and chairman Stéphan Pieterse says: “My dream was simple — to run in order to change lives. Twenty years later, we’ve seen children like Tesswin Douries thrive through specialised education and future Springboks like Gino Cupido emerge. D4D is proof of what happens when people unite around a cause.”
For Pieterse, the future lies in continuing to create opportunities for ordinary people to make an extraordinary impact — whether running, cycling, swimming, hiking, volunteering, or simply giving.

As D4D looks ahead, the invitation is clear: individuals, families, schools, and companies all have a role to play in shaping the next 20 years of impact.
