Today, with over two decades of dedicated experience, Cobus Germishuys stands as the personification of the Stellenbosch wine experience. He proves that while labels and owners may change, the true relationship between a farm and its guests is built on the people who bring the stories to life.
A Cinematic Beginning
Cobus’s journey began on 16 March 2000, through a twist of fate. A chance conversation in with the new owner of the Mulderbosch and Spier properties led to an immediate job offer. Within three days, Cobus had signed his contract, beginning a career that would see him as a recognized Brand Ambassadors in the South African wine industry.

An Era of Awards and Global Icons
The early 2000s marked a “Golden Era” for the estate. While winemaking masters like Mike Dobrovic and Teddy Hall (a former Diners Club Winemaker of the Year) focused on the cellar, Cobus was the bridge to the world. As the face of the brand, he managed the hospitality for a “who’s who” of global figures from Margaret Thatcher, Boris Johnson, and the Prince of Jordan to icons like Oprah Winfrey, Cobus ensured that the farm’s world-class awards were matched by a standard of service that made every visitor feel like a guest of honour.
Navigating the “Great Brand Swap”
The most significant test of his leadership arrived at the end of 2011. In a move unique to Cape wine history, the brands essentially traded locations. The Mulderbosch name moved to the Polkadraai area, while the original home of Mulderbosch in the Koelenhof Valley—situated right next to Beyerskloof—was rebranded as Kanu. Cobus was the key to this transition. Because of his deep personal connection with the guests, he guided regulars through the change, ensuring their loyalty remained with the team and the soil, even as the name on the bottle shifted.
The Modern Metamorphosis
Since 2017, under ABC Investments, Cobus has overseen the farm’s evolution into a premier lifestyle destination. While the transformation is anchored by the Du Vin Restaurant, the heart of the estate remains its wine tasting. This journey reached a new peak at the end of 2025 with the unveiling of the fully refurbished cellar experience. These new cellar stalls offer an intimate and contemporary underground environment where guests can rediscover the estate’s wine ranges through curated, immersive tastings.

Beyond the cellar, the farm has expanded into a diverse leisure retreat. The Nest serves as a dedicated Curio Shop, offering a unique selection of artisanal finds, while the grounds feature professional putt-putt and bass fishing. Exclusive helicopter rides have also been introduced for specific events, offering guests a rare aerial perspective of the Stellenbosch vineyards.
The Soul of the Service
In an industry where people often move between farms every few seasons, Cobus’s twenty-six years of dedication is a rare testament to his character. He remains the reason people keep coming back—proving that while the public may know him as the “Wine Angel of Stellenbosch,” his true legacy is being the human heartbeat that makes every visit to Kanu unforgettable.
