From 29 August to 7 September 2025, the town of Clanwilliam becomes a vibrant centre of floral wonder as it hosts the annual Clanwilliam Wildflower Show—one of the most cherished events on the Cape’s spring calendar. Set in the historic Blomkerk (Flower Church), a beautifully preserved Dutch Reformed Church dating back to 1864, the show offers an indoor floral experience like no other.
Inside the church, a dedicated team of volunteers recreates the region’s distinct floral habitats—Cederberg, Karoo, Sandveld, wetlands, and coastal zones—using natural materials and fresh flower specimens. Around 360 to 400 wildflower species are carefully harvested (under permit), displayed in concealed water-filled tins, and arranged to mimic their natural environments.
The show is not only visually stunning but also educational. Visitors can engage with experts who identify rare species, explain pollination and propagation processes, and raise awareness about conservation. Many of the displayed plants are endemic to the region and found nowhere else on Earth.
More than just a botanical exhibit, the Wildflower Show is a lively community event. While the focus remains on the flowers, visitors may also find local food stalls, craft vendors, and opportunities to explore Clanwilliam’s cultural heritage.
This long-standing tradition, dating back to 1940, continues to draw visitors from across South Africa and abroad. Accommodation fills quickly, so early booking is essential. Many visitors also pair the show with trips to Ramskop Nature Reserve, the Rooibos Tea House, or nearby rock art sites.
