The iKhaya le Themba Project has once again felt the powerful impact of the Cape Town Cycle Tour. The 2025 event helped the organisation raise more than R60,000 in support of its fledgling sports and fitness programme. Based in local communities, iKhaya le Themba’s holistic after-school centre provides essential educational, psychosocial, and physical care to 163 primary school learners. These funds have enabled meaningful improvements, demonstrating how the Cape Town Cycle Tour continues to uplift local communities far beyond race day.
Building a Sustainable Future Through Sport
The money raised by Charity Cyclists in 2025 allowed iKhaya le Themba to invest in much-needed sports equipment and uniforms. Crucially, it also ensured that their dedicated soccer and fitness coach, Lunathi, could continue his mentorship work throughout the year. In communities where access to structured sport is often limited, these resources are essential for keeping young people active, confident, and connected. The programme’s success is reflected in the pride and unity of the riders and volunteers who participate each year.
Looking ahead, the organisation will ride with renewed purpose in the 2026 Cape Town Cycle Tour. All funds raised are set to strengthen the sports programme by topping up reserves for coaching fees and equipment. A vital long-term goal is the upgrading of the current soccer field with astro turf to create a safer, more durable playing surface for the children.
David Bellairs, CEO of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, praised the initiative: “This event has always been about more than cycling. It is about the belief that communities can be strengthened when people come together for something bigger than themselves.” By providing access to structure and opportunity, iKhaya le Themba continues to highlight how sport can be a platform for positive change and youth empowerment.
