Cape Town City Ballet invites audiences to tumble down the rabbit hole at Artscape this festive season with a brand-new production of Alice in Wonderland by internationally acclaimed choreographer Gerard Charles.
Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s timeless tales Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, this enchanting ballet promises a theatrical journey filled with whimsy, wonder and artistry. Audiences will follow Alice as she steps into a fantastical world teeming with curious creatures, mischievous characters and unforgettable adventures, all brought to life through Cape Town City Ballet’s signature blend of classical grace and vibrant storytelling.
Gerard Charles brings a wealth of experience of coaching international ballet performers to this premiere as well as an interest in creating a unique new interpretation for Cape Town dance lovers. Charles is celebrated for his ability to blend technical precision with theatrical charm, a hallmark that shines in his adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. He has also mentored two emerging choreographers, namely principal Leusson Muniz who is cast as The Mad Hatter, and corps de ballet member Abdul Isaacs, who have each contributed to a section of the production.
This spectacular production marks another milestone in the illustrious history of Cape Town City Ballet, now in its 92nd year. As the oldest ballet company in Africa, Cape Town City Ballet continues to uphold a legacy of artistic excellence and innovation, delighting audiences with productions that merge tradition with fresh, imaginative vision.
Joining the Cape Town City Ballet cast will be professional actor Gregan Aherin, and Amahle Cindy Nyeke from The Rainbow Academy performing arts and business school who will portray a number of different characters in the ballet. Four up-and-coming young dancers from various ballet schools in Cape Town – Zara Yazbek, Kai Damon, Cameron Payne and Sinethemba Wisani – will alternate as the young Alice. In other exciting news, this production gives 90 children the chance to take to the stage (30 per show), as playing cards, flowers and fish.
On the creative side, Stephanie Gerkens’ set designs have been re-interpreted by Birrie le Roux and Stefan Benade, while lighting design is by Faheem Bardien, projections are by Kirsti Cumming, select costume design is by David Pamplin, and props and head pieces are by Prop Works SA.
