Cape Town Bound: Lufthansa Boosts Mother City Flights

Lufthansa

Cape Town is about to get an even bigger influx of European travellers just in time for our upcoming summer peak. The Lufthansa Group has unveiled its blockbuster Winter 2026/27 schedule (which kicks off at the end of October), rolling out an all-time high of 38 weekly flights between South Africa and Europe.

While Johannesburg is getting some notable upgrades, it’s the Mother City that stands to reap the most immediate lifestyle and tourism rewards. Here is what the massive expansion means for local globetrotters and our hospitality industry.

Daily Flights to Frankfurt and Red-Carpet Cabins

The headline news for locals is the expansion of the Frankfurt-Cape Town route. Lufthansa is adding a permanent Monday flight, officially turning this into a daily, nonstop service.

Whether you are jetting off to Europe for a winter ski trip or welcoming international friends, you no longer have to plan around awkward “off-days.” Even better, this route will be operated by the ultra-modern Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, completely kitted out with Lufthansa’s highly anticipated Allegris premium cabin concept.

Lufthansa

If you’ve ever felt standard long-haul flights leave you feeling a bit battered, this is a game-changer. The Allegris cabin focuses heavily on privacy, high-tech features, and top-tier acoustics across Business Class, Premium Economy, and Economy.

Combine that with Lufthansa’s existing daily Cape Town-Munich service (on the Airbus A350-900, also featuring Allegris), and Cape Town travelers now have 14 weekly flights to Germany’s biggest hubs, wrapped in absolute comfort.

Swiss Hospitality on Tap

It’s not just Germany getting a boost. For locals dreaming of the Swiss Alps or easy connections out of Central Europe, Edelweiss—Switzerland’s leading leisure airline and part of the Lufthansa Group—is locking in up to five nonstop flights a week between Cape Town and Zurich. These will be flown on their sleek Airbus A350s, bringing a healthy dose of Swiss hospitality directly to the runway at Cape Town International.

Between the daily Frankfurt routes, daily Munich routes, and the frequent Zurich connections, Cape Town is firmly cemented as a premier global destination.

The Economic Ripple Effect

This isn’t just a win for local vacationers; it’s a massive injection into the Western Cape economy. Following a roaring tourism rebound—with South Africa clocking 10.5 million international arrivals in 2025—direct air connectivity is our economic lifeblood. More daily flights mean full boutique hotels, bustling restaurants along the Atlantic Seaboard, and packed wine estates across Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

What’s Happening up North?

While Cape Town enjoys its daily German connections, our neighbours in Gauteng aren’t being left behind. Johannesburg is gaining two additional weekly flights to Munich (moving from three to five), and vital for corporate travellers, all long-haul flights from O.R. Tambo will now operate as comfortable night services to help beat the jetlag. Furthermore, SWISS will introduce its ultra-luxurious “SWISS Senses” cabin interior on its daily Zurich-Johannesburg route.

Ultimately, whether you are flying out of Cape Town for business or pleasure, Europe has never felt closer—or more comfortable.
