Building stronger communities in South Africa by supporting vulnerable children

What began as an employee-driven idea blossomed into a moment of warmth and dignity for 144 children when Kwikspace delivered winter essentials to Durbanville Children’s Home. More than just clothing, the initiative reflected a spirit of care, reminding the children that their community has not forgotten them.

Employee-Led Initiative with Heart

The handover took place on 26 June 2025, led by members of Kwikspace’s Cape Town team, including Ashley Adams, Lance Koen, JP Heyns, Neil van Schalkwyk, and Henco Lourens. Each child received a personalised hoodie, many in Kwikspace’s signature blue, along with individually packed snack packs. The items were sourced through collaborative staff efforts, with suppliers also lending their support.

For the children, some of whom have faced neglect or abuse, the gifts were more than practical necessities. They were symbols of care and belonging. “The appreciation shown by the children and the facility tour given by Jessica was a heart-warming experience that has inspired our team to fast-track plans for the next donation drive,” said Ashley Adams, Regional Branch Manager.

Supporting a Community Anchor

Durbanville Children’s Home has been a cornerstone of care since 1883, providing safety, stability, and developmental support to children aged 2 to 18 from Cape Town and surrounding rural areas. With only a third of its annual budget covered by government funding, the home relies heavily on private donations and community contributions.

“For many of the children, having a brand-new, warm hoodie is more than just a necessity – it’s a reminder that there are people who care about them and want to see them thrive,” said Jessica Evershed, Function Coordinator at the home.

The relationship between Kwikspace and the Home extends beyond this donation. In 2024, the organisation purchased a modular unit from Kwikspace to expand its facilities, underlining how infrastructure and social investment can work hand in hand.

Building a Culture of Care

This initiative reflects Kwikspace’s commitment to supporting children and young people in practical, meaningful ways. By focusing on projects that bring direct benefit to vulnerable groups, the company demonstrates how business involvement can stretch beyond infrastructure to genuine human impact.

Plans are already underway for future projects, with staff motivated to continue driving efforts that uplift communities. Each new initiative strengthens the link between corporate involvement and social progress, proving that companies can play an active role in shaping brighter futures.

A Call for Broader Action

Kwikspace’s gesture serves as a reminder that meaningful impact often starts with a single act of care. While their support has brought comfort to the children of Durbanville Children’s Home, countless other child-focused projects across South Africa are equally in need — from schools and safe houses to aftercare centres and youth programmes. Businesses, organisations, and individuals all have the ability to follow this example, stepping in to provide resources, mentorship, or even just time. Every contribution, big or small, creates ripples of change that help shape a stronger, more hopeful future for South Africa’s children.
