The landscape of the Western Cape is set for a historic transformation following the announcement that Boogertman + Partners has been appointed as the lead architects for the Cape Winelands Airport development. This ambitious project, located 13 kilometres northeast of Durbanville, aims to evolve the former Fisantekraal Airfield—originally established in 1943 as a South African Air Force base—into a world-class “airport city”.
A Vision Rooted in the Cape
The architectural direction for the new terminal is deeply tied to the unique aesthetic of the region. The design is envisioned as a striking, undulating, sculptural glass and steel form that appears to rise organically from the ground. This design is an abstracted interpretation of the natural topography and agricultural tapestry of the Winelands and Swartland, blurring the boundary between the built structure and the landscape. According to creative lead Wessel van Dyk, the goal is to impart a powerful visual identity that is profoundly rooted in its place.
Economic and Regional Impact
With an expected initial investment of R8 billion to R10 billion, the development represents a massive vote of confidence in the regional economy. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, the project is a powerful engine for job creation. It is estimated to sustain approximately 35,000 direct and indirect jobs initially, with the potential to support over 100,000 jobs during its first 20 years of operation.
The master plan is designed for phased expansion and includes:
- A new boutique terminal and runway infrastructure.
- A 450-hectare developable estate designed to support economic growth and attract new investment.
- Upgraded airside systems and enhanced cargo and logistics operations.
- A modernised general aviation precinct, continuing the site’s legacy as a hub for flight training.
Sustainability at Its Core
The airport is guided by an ethos of environmental stewardship, aiming to be one of the greenest airports in the world. The project will target leading environmental ratings and certifications. This “smart” aviation precinct will utilize a flexible urban design framework that can evolve with local conditions, stakeholder input, and future mobility trends.
Global Expertise meets Local Insight
Boogertman + Partners, one of Africa’s largest architectural firms, will collaborate with amd.sigma, a Berlin-based strategic airport development company and subsidiary of Munich Airport International. This partnership ensures that international standards for passenger processing and terminal efficiency are integrated with deep local knowledge.
The appointment of Boogertman + Partners marks a final major milestone following strategic partnerships with Growthpoint Properties and WBHO Construction at the end of 2025. By blending state-of-the-art infrastructure with a design that honours the Western Cape’s natural beauty, the project is set to become a destination in its own right. As Nicholas Ferguson, Managing Director of RSA Aero, notes, the finished gateway will reflect the character, beauty, and heritage of the region for generations to come.
