Within just 30 years – a single generation – Beyerskloof has become synonymous with South Africa’s heritage varietal, Pinotage. It all started with a vineyard, planted on a modest home farm located off Koelenhof Road in Stellenbosch, in 1988. It was at this historic moment, when Beyers Truter dug his hands into the soil to plant the first vines, that an iconic story was set in motion.
Several years later, in 1995, the very first Beyerskloof Pinotage was produced and bottled, and within a year, it claimed the first of numerous Absa Top 10 Pinotage awards.
Beyerskloof’s growth continued, and in 1997, an additional 100 hectares were acquired in the Bottelary Winelands of Stellenbosch. The landholding expanded once more in 2018 with the purchase of an extra 50 hectares of vineyards known as Kriekbult. These vineyards offer a scenic view from the deck of the Red Leaf Bistro at Beyerskloof, stretching across the winery to the majestic Simonsberg Mountain.
Today, Winemaker Anri Truter, son of Beyers carries on his father’s legacy, while driving new horizons. With his passion for innovation in both vineyards and cellar, the future of Beyerskloof and Pinotage holds exciting promise.
“For us, passionate winemaking is a way of life. Since planting our initial vineyards in Stell-enbosch over three decades ago, we have emerged as one of South Africa’s premier red wine producers, deeply devoted to Pinotage. While our primary focus lies in showcasing the nation’s heritage varietal, we are dedicated to narrating a unique story with each of our wines. Feel at home, pour yourself a glass, and accompany us on this extraordinary journey.”
