Benguela Cove: A Year of Unforgettable Wine, Sustainability, and Community

Benguela Cove

“As the festive season approaches and we look back on 2024, it’s clear that this has been a landmark year for Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate. From the breathtaking landscapes of Botriver Lagoon to the cool climate vineyards of West Sussex, our journey is one of passion, connection, and unwavering commitment to quality. For those seeking exceptional wine, stunning natural beauty, and meaningful experiences, Benguela Cove has become a destination like no other.

A Transcontinental Wine Story

Our wine story this year has expanded beyond South Africa to include the cool-climate vineyards of West Sussex, where we launched three highly anticipated maiden cuvées: Blanc de Blancs 2020, Brut Reserve 2021, and Brut Rosé 2021. With a strong focus on Chardonnay, these wines reflect the elegance and finesse of English sparkling wine at its best. The swallow – our symbol – represents not just the migration of this beautiful bird between England and South Africa, but our family’s journey in wine, bridging two worlds and embracing the unique qualities of each region.

Our Michelin-starred Restaurant Interlude, located at Leonardslee Gardens in West Sussex, has continued to bring our philosophy to life through food. Since its initial Michelin star in 2019, Interlude received the prestigious Green Michelin Star in 2024, marking a significant achievement for our South African born chef, Jean Delport. With an emphasis on sustainable fine dining, Interlude tells the story of our land, our history, and our commitment to thoughtful, eco-conscious practices.

Embracing Sustainability and Biodiversity

Back home in the Kogelberg Biosphere – a UNESCO World Heritage site – we’ve worked tirelessly on conservation initiatives, including restoring wetlands that support a diversity of bird species and wildlife. We’re proud to be a WWF Conservation Champion accredited estate, and every decision we make is guided by a commitment to preserve this unique environment for generations to come. Our sustainable farming practices minimize waste, protect biodiversity, and aim to have a positive impact on the land.

For guests visiting this holiday season, our estate offers countless ways to connect with nature: bird-watching tours, lagoon kayaking, and eco-friendly walking paths that bring you closer to the surrounding flora and fauna.

Celebrating South African Culture and Community

This year, Benguela Cove has been more than just a place to stay – it’s been a community. We’re proud of the local jobs we’ve created, which not only support our estate, but give back to our region by nurturing South African talent. Our estate has become a place of cultural storytelling through food, art, and wine, giving guests an experience that is both authentic and enriching.

Holiday Fun for All Ages

We’re excited to welcome guests to Benguela Cove this festive season with a full calendar of events. Enjoy concerts, wine appreciation events, cellar tours, and, of course, exceptional dining options throughout the estate. For families, our 18-hole Adventure Golf course will be open daily from 12 December 2024 to 17 January 2025, offering a fun escape for kids and adults alike.

Benguela Cove is more than a wine estate; it’s a destination that connects people with nature, culture, and community. As we celebrate this year’s achievements, we invite you to be part of our story.”
