Benguela Cove: A Legacy of History, Love, and World-Class Wine

Benguela Cove’s rich history and remarkable journey in winemaking stand as a tribute to resilience, romance, and the natural beauty of Hermanus’s Bot River Lagoon. This picturesque estate on the slopes of the Bot River Lagoon has been an unchanging witness to history, from WWII to the advent of award-winning wines, now celebrated worldwide.

During the Second World War, the tranquil waters of the Bot River Lagoon were stirred by the landings of British Catalina planes. These amphibious aircrafts served as reconnaissance planes, providing vital surveillance for the Allied forces. But alongside their missions, they left another legacy – one of love. Young British pilots, captivated not only by the scenic beauty of the region, but also by the charm of the local South African women, often met their future brides right on the lagoon’s shores. After the war, these aviators returned to South Africa, forging a cultural bond that resonates to this day.

Fast forward to 2009, when Benguela Cove embarked on a bold new venture: transforming its slopes from open grazing fields into lush vineyards. Initially, the terrain drew scepticism, with many questioning whether its cool coastal climate and soil would ever yield premium grapes. Yet, the estate’s viticulture and winemaking teams have defied expectations. Benguela Cove’s wines, all estate-grown, estate-bottled, and estate-produced, have since garnered national and international acclaim.

One particular wine honours the site’s historic connection to the Catalina planes: Catalina, an exceptional Semillon that has repeatedly won prestigious awards. With each bottle, Catalina captures the spirit of those who once flew across these skies and the landscape that now produces wines celebrated for their expression of the place.

Recent accolades include Benguela Cove’s recognition as the 86th best vineyard in the world – an extraordinary achievement for a relatively young estate. The vineyard’s terroir, enriched by the coastal influence, endows the wines with a unique, refreshing salinity, capturing the essence of the sea and climate in every sip. Benguela Cove’s wines stand as a testament to the dedication of a team driven to turn the area’s unique conditions into world-class wines.

To share this passion, the estate has launched an exclusive loyalty club, welcoming wine enthusiasts into a community where members can enjoy wine-centred events, exclusive rewards, and the chance to connect with fellow appreciators. Whether exploring our latest releases or simply enjoying the landscape that has become a destination in itself, members have a unique opportunity to become a part of Benguela Cove’s evolving legacy.
